THE LATE SIR H.A. ATKINSON.

Sir Harry Atkinson was buried at the Kavori Cemetery, Wellington, on Thursday morning. The cortege was one of the largest ever seen at Wellington, being nearly a mile in length. The Governor was represented by an aide-de-camp. The principal mourners were Lady Atkinson and family, and Justice and Mrs Richmond. All the members of the Government and both branches of the Legislature were present, also the leading clergy, principal citizens, heads of the Cjyfl Service, volunteers, and police, and officer* of. the H.M.S. Ringarooma. At St Mark’s Church the burial service was read, after which the procession proceeded to Karori. All points of vantage were thronged with spectators, and the mam thoroughfares were thronged. The officers of the Government Insurance Department attended in a body. A large number of wreaths were piled on the coffin, which was borne on a gun carriage, preceded by the Permanent Artillery and Garrison Band. At New Plymouth on Thursday the shops were all closed and flags half-mast high. At 1 1 o’clock the volunteers and many of the major’s old comrades met in Devon street, when the yotniitoer band played the Dead March, and at St Mary’s Church the bell was tolled. The ceremony was very imposing for all who fought with the Major thirty ..years ago are now greyheaded men. At Dunedin the Harbor Board passed a resolution testifying to the deceased’s services to the country. The Wellington Education Board passed a vote of condolence with Mrs Atkinson and family. The Banco Court in Wellington adjourned as a mark of respect. The Speaker’s chair in the House of Repres<mt»tiyoß was draped with crape on Wednesday afternoon. About a fortnight ago Sir Harry Atkinson W3S examined by Drs Collins, .Fell, and Aijumm who informed him that he could not j ivy longer than six months. Deceased’s life was insured for £2OOO.
