DEFENDING THE COLONIES.
London, June 20. Mr Dibbs, in a letter occupying two columns of the Times, defends the Australian Qolouies from the aspersions cast upon them. He says that the recent attempts upon the honor and credit of the colonies have produced the impression in Australia that the falsest ideas ary current at Home. Formerly England was more ready to lend than Australia was to borrow, but now it is a crime to launch a loan. He vigorously defends the financial condition of Australia, the debt of which, though nominally heavier, is, he asserts, actually less in px-oportion than that of Great Britain. He compares the debt with the public and private wealth, showing that' between 1881 and 1890 £45,000,000 was received from outside sources, while £158,000,000 was invested by the people of New South Wales alone. That British investors helped its progress, he admitted, but the colony would prosper without their assistance.
