KAKAHU BUSH.
(From a Correspondent,') This secluded district, which rarerely—a,t any rate, in your columns—pushes itself into public notice, has of late been indulging in unwonted festivities. Since the exciting evening when a bold bicyclist endeavored to swim, wdieel and all, the rapid Opihi, and left his wheel under tpa rushing waters, wo Live pursued the palm mvth ( 4 QUV daily life, only disturbed by rumors of the rising price of oats, or the momentous question qf shingle. Lately, howevex’, a social was held, at which the late teacher, Miss Meuzies, was presented witlx a handsome silver tea and coffee service \ a traction engine and mill actually succeeded, after weeks of delay, ju reaching us, and forthwith threshed all
the grain left by wind, weather, birds, and rats ; and now the new School Committee has met and resolved upon the annual school concert in aid of funds. The Bush bids fair to be busy this winter, for of course the ladies and the committee intend the concert, with its following dance, to be as successful as the best; and when the ladies make up their minds, to say nothing of the committee, why the thing is as good as done. As a specially fine night, with bright moonlight, is bespoken for the concert, the distance of the school from such centres of civilisation as Temnka, Geraldine, Timaru, and Pleasant Point is not expected to prevent the room from being crowded, and the treasurer’s heart relieved of its present burden.
The new School Committee held its first meeting on Saturday evening, 18th instant, Messrs C. Johnson, J. Mailer, H. Wreathall, A. Maxwell, G. Clark, H. Mills, and S. E. Graham being present. Mr Graham was re-elected chairman and some necessary business transacted re the appointment of cleaner and other matters. It was decided to close the school for the winter holidays until the 4th July, and also to hold the annual concert. The average attendance has risen from 24 last quarter to 28 this, and but for the prevalence of slight ailments amongst the children might have been still higher.
