TEMUKA LICENSING COMMITTEE.
The annual meeting of the above was held at the Courthouse, Temuka, yesterday, at noon. Present— Messrs J. Talbot (chairman), W. G. Aspinall, S. Clinch, and M. Quinn.
The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. POLICE REPORTS. The police reports upon the licensed houses was read. No objection was made by the police to the renewal of the licenses of the Star, Crown, Wallingford, Temuka, Wolseley, Winchester, and Orari hotels. In respect of the Royal Hotel an unfavorable report was made as to the buildings and furniture. A supplementary report said that the licensee did not exercise reasonable care in the conduct of his house.
The applicant, Mr M. McAteer, was called but was not present. On enquiring it transpired that through an oversight the clerk had not furnished him with a copy of the police objections. When repremanded for not doing so he gave as an excuse that he was not in good health, and not able to be present in court that day.
Mr Salmond, who was present, pointed out that under Section 83 of the Act there was no difficulty in proceeding with the matter.
The committee adjourned. On resuming the chairman said that the licenses of the Star (J. Angland), Crown (H. Lee), Wolseley (T. Langdou), and Winchester (J. Mclntosh), would be granted unconditionally. In respect of the Wallingford, no objection was made by the police, but the committee was given to understand that the fence required repairs. On the under landing that this would be done the license would be granted. Mr Scannell gave the requisite assurance. With regard to the Tenmka Hotel the chairman intimated that the license would be withheld until June 20th, by which time the committee expected that the fences and gates would be put in proper qrder. granted upon the same terms as at Wipchester. Mr Bread ley offered no objection, further than that he was liable to be, often is called out at all hours of th§ night to afford accommodation to travellers with stock, etc., find on this account he thought there should be some little consideration shown him. The committee could not see its way to do otherwise than had already been intimated. Mr Breadley accepted the conditions, but asked advice as to his liability under the new license to serve people who knocked JUm up at a 1! hours.
