FOOTBALL.
The meeting on Thursday last of tin crack junior team of last season—tin Union Second —and Temuka proved a-i interesting contest. As already record c in these columns the home team prove victorious by 4 to 2. The Temuka wen somewhat weaker than when they player the Colonials, but knowing that they wen likely to suffer defeat they went into the contest with a determination seldom seer from a Temuka team. On the team lining out it was evident that the Union had the advantage in weight, but the excellent manner in which the home team played together and packed every scrum showed that the game was not to be one-sided. After the kick off the Temuka men assumed the offensive .and penned down the Union, J but without affect. The reds relieved, j and from scrummaging near the centre the home team carried on a dribble, and McLeod and Low backing up well the latter had the reward of scoring. The kick by Henry was fruitless. Soon after, owing to bad play amongst the Temuka backs, Strachan, for the Union, got in cleverly, and scored behind the posts. The kick at an easy angle by T. Anderson went wide, and the spell ended—2 all. On resuming the game was delightfully fast, and both sides made strenuous efforts to score. The Temuka men worked the play down to a few feet of Union line, and McLeod, very cleverly taking the ball on the throw in, ran in and scored. The kick was again a failure, From this out the Union was hard pressed, and time was called with the play in their 25. The game was mainly a forward one, and all the local forwards worked well. With Findlay and Henry in the van, well backed up by Barrett and Diamond, they screwed and carried every scrum. In the loose Henry. Anderson, and Robinson showed to advantage. The backs bad very little to do. McCallnm played a sterling game, and frequently stopped dangerous rushes. Low showed to advantage at three-quarter, and we trust to see him playing frequently. Brosnahau had not many chances to show his pace, and McLeod played a sound game. He is a little uncertain at times in taking the ball, but will improve. Owing to a bad leg Russell was not seen to advantage. The pick of the Union forwards were Gray, Padget, and Bright. Their back play was erratic, The best men were Strachan and Andersons (2). Owing to the lateness of the hour when the game started it was dark when time was called. Mr J. Gillespie acted as referee, and had very little growling to put up with. A match between the Wairaataitai (North Timaru) and Temuka Public .Schools took place in Temuka on Saturday, and resulted j in a win for the Wairaataitai by 20 points to 2. '
On Thursday next the home team meet Pleasant Point, and should give a good account of themselves, but must remember that the Point team has improved, and must not be despised. The following will represent Temuka in their match with Pleasant Point on Thursday next: —Full-back: IV. Russell; three-quarter-backs : Brosnahan, McLeod, and Anderson; half-backs: Rogers and Findlay; forwards: Henry, Findlay (captain), Barrett, Diamond, Erwood, Robinson, Greaves, Gaifaney, and J.
