THE RAINHILL AND WINDSOR MURDERS.
London, May 18. The Privy Council unanimously refused to allow an appeal in Deeming’s case. When Deeming’s case came before the Privy Council, his solicitors urged that evidence was forthcoming to show that the condemned man was not responsible for his actions. To this Lord Halsbury, the Lord Chancellor, replied that the Court had nothing to do with the affidavit of Deerqing’s journey to Australia, and went on to say that the Council never interfered with the business of Colonial Courts unless the proceedings were irregular, or where an injustice, which had not been shown to exist in this case, had been done to the appellant. Six Lords concurred in the opinion of Lord Halsbury. Deeming’s solicitor prayed Lord Knutsford tq order Lord Hopetoun, Governor of Victoria, to stop the execution, but he refused to do so, May 20. The Times referring to Deeraing’s case said that it had been a failure that would discourage the pestilent medical superstition of the fact that insanity is a mixture of morbid sentiment, false psycology, and physiology. Lord Knutsford has refused to consider Deeming’s appeal. Melbourne May 20. Deeming now denies that he confessed to the Windsor crime. His statement is ready, and has been handed to the gaol governor with a request that it b§ published after fiis execution.
