S.C. HOSPITAL AND CHARITABLE AID BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the South' Canterbury Hospital and Charitable Aid Board was held on Tuesday. Present— Messrs J. Jackson (chairman), F. R. Gillingham, G. H. Graham, and A. Sherratt. The chairman stated that things had been going on smoothly during the month. The finances were £4OO in credit, but after passing accounts that would be reduced to £96 13s 4d. The local bodies’ payments were due on Ist June. One of them, the Geraldine Road Board, had already sent its cheque for £9O 12s 7d. He anticipated increased demands for charitable aid during the coming winter, as there was a prospect of hard times for the poorer classes. The distribution of rations during April had, however, been less than in April last year, 2837, as against 3292. There were now 66 children boarded out and in the barracks and in the industrial schools at Burnham and Nelson; two less than last year. There were one or two matters of importance requiring urgent attention, though, as there were sq few members present they inight be held over till next meeting. These arose from letters from the Waimate Hospital Trustees. It vpas shown that the bank had refused to honor any more of the Waimate Hospital Trustees’ cheques, and also pressed for the extinction of the overdraft—.about £2OO. The bank was not aware that the trustees could throw their liabilities on the S.C. Board. After some discussion a resolution was passed authorising the bank to allow the overdraft up to the amount named (the half-yearly subscription from the Waimate County Council) such overdraft to be extinguished by the first payment from the council to the board. The hon. secretary to the Grey River Hospital, wrote requesting a copy of rules and other information regarding the duties and authority of the honorary staff. Mrs Ross, Christchurch, thanked the board for their recommendation of F. R. Phillips to the Rotorua sanatorium, but stating that he could not take advantage of it at present, being too weak to go. Several charitable aid cases were dealt with, increased allowance being made in two Waimate cases, qn the application of Mr Graham. - Hospital accounts amounting to £159 16s lOd, and charitable aid accounts to £143 19s lOd, were passed for payment. A chemist’s account from Geraldine was considered too high, and remitted to the local member to inquire into. bet ? wppi?^ ES,- ’ o ’- :;r the sin Oe-coro cable between ..angamu and Wakapuaka the uvuegraph officials maintain a continuous llow of 62 messages per hour, averagin'* from -5 to at) words each.
