AROWHENUA TOWN BOARD.
The monthly meeting of the above was held last night. Present —Messrs J. Ashwell (Chairman), A. Frew and E. Brown. CORKESI’ONDKiSrCE. Correspondence was road as follows : —> From the Commissioner of Taxes, covering notice under the Laud and Income Assessment Act. From the Commissioner of Taxes, stating inter alia that it was proposed to lay off the section known as a market reserve in lots of 2 acres, and offer the same under the Village Homestead„ system. From the came, under date April 22, stating that he had again written to the Surveyor-General upon the subject of the Taumatak'.'hn Creek, as being of urgency. If the funds were available the Commissioner thought the board could best attend to the work itself. From the same, under date May 10th, advising that the Surveyor - General advises that the Government cannot undertake the task of keeping the creek clear, and that settlers should combine for the purpose, “It had also been suggested to Mr Edgeler (who wrote on behalf of the settlers) that as the water was hardly lit for drinking purposes the settlers should sink wells.’'—The board were of opinion that the Surveyor-General was under a misapprehension about the creek. The board only desired to have the creek lands duly vested in the local body and the creek put in proper order. They were quite prepared to maintain it then, From the clerk to the Gerald’no County Council, stating the board’s share of contribution to hospital and charitable aid was J c7 2s 4d, and making demand for £3 11s 2d, half of that amount. From Mr Peter Ooira asking that the - name of Mrs Harriet E. Coira be placed qpou the roll in respect of section 599. —Agreed to, From Mr Thomas Bourke, making application for a change upon the roll in respect of property recently sold by him. —The clerk to attend. A circular was received from Mr Wilfred Badger, relative to Law Books published by him, and soliciting order for same,
OVERSEERS I!EPOUT. “ I have to report that during the month the contractor has completed the building of bridge in village settlement. Some repairs have been effected to the cottages. Mr Washington has cleaned qut tlpat portion of the creek fronting land occupied by kim. As authorised a start has been made with shingling south end of Hornbrooic Street, the water-tables of which have been cleaned at the expense of the contractor, Mr Fletcher. Some little patching will have to be done to the main roads, and I recommend that this bo done by day labour, as on a previous occasion. It
will also be necessary to complete the formation of the half-chain road leading to the new bridge. I have gone through the assessment roll, and notified the Commissioner of some 37 alterations that should be made. The overseeer brought up the question of a lamp in the village settlement, and after some little consideration he was authorised to have alamp erected at the corner of Maude and Denmark street. Ho was authorised to have ruts filled in where required. It was decided to invite tenders for the formation of the half-chain road in the village settlement. « ACCOUNTS. Accounts to the amount of £4 13s Gd were passed for payment. The meca.ig then terminated.
