COMMERCIAL.
CIIRISTCHURCH CORN EXCHANGE. The following is the Corn Exchange report (per Y. Denliam, Secretary), for the week ending May lith : Wheat—A little more activity during the week. We submitted a large mixed line of sound, and all the offers were the same, 3s Gd, f.0.b., though we subsequently placed at a shade higher for an urgent demand. Barley— l The market has fallen Hat. We have .jeen several lots (for which good offers were made) put into store for a higher price, and the growers wish they may get it, though we fear they will not. Potatoes —A few offers for delivery to August at 20s; for immediate delivery price as last week. Oats—Very little demand, and few offering. The following are the prices paid to farmers, f.0.b., packages extra : Wheat—Prime tuscan, 3s 7d ; pearl, 3s Gd ; hunters, 3s sd. Oats—Milling, Is 8d ; feed sorts, Is 4d to Is Gid. Barley—Fair malting, 3s Gd; feed i descriptions, 1 s Od to 2s. ! Beans—3s Id to 3s 2d. Peas —Blue Prussians, 2s lid to 3s. Ryegrass—Machine dressed, 3s to 3s Gd. Cocksfoot—Same as last week. Butter—Factory, lOd ; farmers', 7d to 9d per lb. Cheese—3d to 3id. Potatoes —17s Gd for immediate delivery. CHRISTCHURCH STOCK MARKETS. At the Adclington yards on Wednesday there were good entries of stock. Sheep—The demand foi good sorts of turnip sheep and breeders was very good indeed. Some very nice crossbred ewes in lamb to good rams and for early lambing, were run up to lGs 4d and 17s Od. Other sales were effected at 10s 9d to 13s lOd, and 14s 3d was given for some two-tooths. Crossbred lambs sold at all prices from 7s ild to lis Gd. Liues of merino ewes, boilors and wethers, were disposed of at 7s sd, 3s 3d and 8s 3d respectively. Fat Sheep—The entry was limited in comparison with recent sales, and prices .'"Miiained firm. In the case of a splenu'f] UUG 01 two-tooth sheep that fetched the higher , price, the actual return was considerably over this. Some monstrously heavy sheep brought 18s to 18s Od, equal to nearly 2d per pound net. In the ewe section some nice sheep were disposed of. the price for these ranging from 2d to 2id per pound net. Merino ewos and wethers brought I2s to 14s for the best, and from 10s Gd for inferior sheep, equal to nearly 3d per pound gross weight. Fat Cattle—The sale of beef was a large one ; a score of very prime steers brought from £8 to £0 ss. These sold at fully 21s per 1001 b. Heifers brought £5 to £G 2s Gd. Store Cattle—The young stock sold very freely in the store pens. Calves to yearlings brought lGs to 325. 18-month to 2-year-olds 38s to 4Gs, 2i-year-olds 53s to £2los, dry cows 30s to £4 5s according to quality and condition. In dairy stock the demand was equal to last week's market. Pigs—About 200 baconers and porkers met with a fairly willing sale at values ivhich showed an inclination to liai'deu, Porkers went from lGs to 245, light aaconers 2Gs to 375, a general clearance jeing effected. DUNEDIN PRODUCE MARKETS. The following is the report for the veek ending Wednesday : Wheat has good inquiry. Prime lulling at 3s lOd to 3s lid; medium, 3s Gd
to 3s lOd, good demand; fowls' whea stood whole, 3s ; medium and broken, to 2s 9d. Barley is in fair demand if good brightMalting at from 3s 3d to 3w (id ; medium, 2s 8d to 3s; milling wanted at from 2s 3d to 2s 6d ; feed, 2s to 2s 3d. Oat<* are now coining on the market, and there is good enquiry for all sortsPrime milling, Is Gd ; good to medium feed, Is od to Is sid; inferior, Is to Is 4d ; all sacks extra, off trucks. Prime Nelson hops, Is. Linseed—£ll to £l3 (wanted). Potatoes —Up to £2. Carrots —30s per ton, sacks extra. Onions—£4, best Canterbury. Pigs—ln good demand, 150 sto 160 s well killed, not too fat 3}d to 3id; hams, 8d ; bacon, 5d to o£d. Chaff—From 35s to 455; tip-top is worth from 45s to 555. Turnips—los to 17s Gd. Straw—Oaten and wheaten, 30s to 35s pel* ton. Clover and ryegrass hay, £3 5s to £3 10s ; hay, oaten, £3. Butter—Fresh, best, Od to lOd; salt in good demand. Eggs—Scarce. Lard—4d to Ud. Honey—4|d to 5d for best extracted. Beeswax, Is per lb. Cheese—Factory, 4{d to ]4Ad ; loaves, Ad more ; best Akaroa, 4d ; medium, 3id to Grass Seeds—Ryegrass, farmers', Is 9d to 2s Gd; machined, 3s 3d to 3s 9d; Italian, 3s 9d to 4s Gd; cocksfoot, 3Jd to 4fd.
Sheepskins—At auction on Tuesdaycountry dry crossbreds, low to medium, brought Is Od to 3s lOd ; do do merino, Is 8d to 3s Id ; full-woolled crossbreds, 4s 3d to Gs Od; do do merino, 3s 8d to 03 8d; dry pelts, 2d to Is Gd; best green crossbred skins, 3s 3d to 3s lOd ; choice, os lid to 4s 4d; medium to good, 2s 3d to 3s; green merino skins—light Is Gd to Is Bd, best Is lOd to 2s 3d ; lambskins — best 2s 7d to 3s, medium to good 1 >, Od to 2s Gd each. Hides The market is unchanged. Quotations for heavy hides, 2 J-d to 2id ; extra do, Gslt> and over, 2f dto 3d ; average price for country hides, to 2d; light, to lid ; inferior and slippy, id to Id per lb. Tallow —Prices lately quoted continue firm. For boat rendered mutton, 10s to 20s; medium to good, lGs to 18.4 Gd; inferior to medium, 13s to 15s; best caul fat, 12s Gd ; inferior to medium and good, 9s to 12s per cwt.
DUNEDIN STOCK MARKETS. At the Burn side Market on Wednesday the following business was transacted:— Fat Cattte.—2s3 head yarded. A fair demand was experienced for the good to prime at prices about equal to last week's, but medium had less attention, sales being less difficult to effect at a considerable reduction on prices ranging for similar quality the week previously. Best bullocks brought £G 15s to £8 5s ; medium to good, £5 5s to 03 5s ; light weights, £3 12s Gd to £5 ; best cows, £5 15s to £G 15s; medium, £4 to £4 17s Gd ; light and aged, £2 5s to £3 10s. Fat Sheep.—22os were penned, including about 250 merino wethers (useful mutton) ; the rest crossbred wethers and ewes, representing all qualities. Prices ruling show but little difference from those obtaining last week. Best crossbred wethers brought 15s Gd to 17s Od; ordinary, 12s 9d to 14s 0d ; best do ewcss, 14s to lGs; ordinary, lis to 13s 3d; merino wethers, Gs 9d to lis. L;unbs.— Only 181 penned, which sold at 12s 3d to 9s od. Pigs. IGB were penned, only a moderate demand experienced. Suckers brought 5s Gd to 5s Od ; slips, 13s to 14s ; stores, 12s to 20s ; porkers, 21s to 27s ; buconers, 30s (id to 375; a few extra heavy pigs to 50s. AUSTRALIAN MARKETS. Svdnkv, May 11. Wheat, chick, 3s Gd to 3s Od. There are no buyers for New Zealand wheat. Milling is at a nominal figure ; tuscan, 4s" 8d; p»arl, 4s 7d; hunters, 4s Gd. Flour, no New Zealand in the market, nominal value, £lO to £ll. Oats, market completely cleaned out of bright heavy sorts ; large stocks of discolored and off quality are on hand. Feeding sorts, 2s to 2s 4d; seed, 2s Gd. Maize, 3s. Cape barley, 3s 3d; English, 3s Od, nominal. Bran, Is 4d, Pollard, Is 4d. Peas, Prussian blue, 3s Gd. Potatoes, New Zealand, £2 5s to £2los. They are likely to decline again on arrival of the Ardle's cargo, Circular Head, £3 ss. Onions, £3 15s. Butter, dairy-made, lid to Is Id; factory-made, Is 2d to Is 3d. Cheese, od to Gd. London. May 10. New Zealand 'Ah per cent, inscribed stock has undergone a further advance and is now quoted at 90, and large business is being done at that figure. The leading bankers in the city agree with Sir Graham Berry that Australian stocks will regain their former value if the colonics abstain from borrowing, otherwise they consider that there must be a collapse. The matter is entirely in the hands of the colonies, Argentine stocks are steadilv improving, " May 11. New Zealand 3i per cent, inscribed stock has advanced 10s to 91 £. A cargo of Victorian wheat has been sold at f 4Jfi (id. The total qmv&tj of wheat and flour iitloat for the United Kingdom is 2,954,000 ijuarters, and for the Continent quarters. Union s,s. Company's shares, £10; Shaw, Raviilt) and Co.'s, £7 10s. The Amercan visible supply of wheat is 40,800,000 bushels.
