A cargo of wheat from South Australia has been sold at 365. The imports for the last quarter show a decrease of £4,000,000, aud the exports of £3,000,000. The Antwerp wool sales are fixed for the 17th to 20th inst. Up to date 8,000 bales have been catalogued, 200 of which come from Australia. May 8. It has been calculated that during the last two years securities admitted to quotation on the Stock Exchange have fallen £250,000,000 in value. It is believed that the recovery of colonial stocks is assured, provided loans are kept down to a minimum, and transactions are confined to large business aud not to driblets. The press is assuming a more friendly tone. The Economist, in an article on Queensland mines, states that of twenty-six companies floated in London since August and October 188 G, only four are at present paying dividends. It advises merchants to be cautious in supplying limited liability companies. Spain has refused Great Britain the most favored nation treatment, aud in consequence parleying between the two countries has ceased. May 10. It is expected that 60,000 gallons of Australian brandy will be placed on the English market before Christmas, and it is hoped that a large trade with Hew York will be developed. Hew Zealand apples, ex Kaikoura, are selling at from 8s to 15s per case. The consignment of grapes, ex the same steamer, arrived in good condition, having been well packed, aud is selling at 9d per pound. Brussels, May 9. There is a severe crisis in the iron industry at Herstall, near Liege, owing to the pressure of the French tariff. It is reported that twenty foundries are closing down.
