overseer's report. The overseer reported as follows : " Contracts: Owing to the wet weather and other causes very little progress has been made with the contracts in hand during the month. No. 349, shingle repa ; vs Boundary road, has been completed, and passed for final payment. No. 350, shingle repairs Geraldine road, is in progress. No. 351, broken metal, Gapefs Valley road, had not been started on my visit three or four days ago. "Works attended to are as follow : Stop banks at Finlaysou's Creek, Waihi Downs; repairs to bridge near Pleasant Valley School; improving and raising road near sawmill, Kakahu'; clearing out creeks at water-race crossings and fords, channels and stop banks at Temple ford, Pleasant Valley; clearing ccrub near Gilbert's, Gapes's Valley. Application for works : Referring to the last-mentioned, a track has been cleared through the scrub on the line of road as far as Foster's street, where the traffic stop 3; formerly a portion of the track was on Mr G. Wreathall's land, which is now being fenced. Deviation : I have been informed by the surveyor who laid out the deviation of the road near Mr Gilbert's that it has been cancelled, and the original line of road adhered to. Shingle : I have examined the creek in Hall's land with a view to obtaining gravel for this road. The drift is composed principally of very rough gravel and boulders, which would be costly to reduce into road metal. I see no prospect of getting any shingle at a reasonable cost for th?s portion of road. Crow's road, Hilton Downs : I have in ■ spected this road, and, with the exception of a short length deeply rutted, found the remainder to u.; in very good order for an unshiugled road. To lower the hills and shingle the cuttings would be expensive, considering the little use that is made of the road and the small advantage to be gained in reducing the grades, which are not extra stiff at present. The shingle would have to be taken from the Kakahu ; the lead is all uphill. Swamp Road: The contract for clearing the drains on this road (unlet last board day) has been undertaken by William Bell, and is now nearly completed. Kakahu Road: As directed I have examined the ground spoken of by Mr Garforth in his letter to the board, and find there would be no difficulty in diverting a portion of the flood water through Mr Studholme's section. Works Required: The wet weather and the grain- carting are finding out the weak places in the main lines of traffic, several of which require shingle repairs, viz., Orari Bridge road, near Stover's ; Shaw's road, Ge:aldine Flat; Hilton and Geraldine road ; Cooper's \ Creek and Rangitata Bridge road. Bennett's road has also been much cut up by carting wheat from the Raukapuka Estate. This road has never been shingled previously, although formed a number of years. Culvert near Borrell's, Beautiful I Valley Road: A large stone culvert caved in during the month, and., as the road was dangerous for traffic, I arranged to have it rebuilt at once. The work is in hand, and will be completed this week. Hilton Bridge : The approach at the west end of this bridge is worn away very much by crossing stock. I would, ask authority to have the slope pitched with stone, to keep up the roadway to the end of the bridge.—l have, etc., " Wm. Shiers, " Oversee.-." It was decided to call for tender.* and have the various works carried out.

INTERVIEWS, Mrs Soott, Woodbury, waited on the bqard re clearing of gorse near her property. Overseer and members to inspect the gorse, and see what is io be done. Mr Corkery interviewed the board with respect to his tender for supplying broken metal fqr Beautiful Valley road, and said he had made a mistake in his tender, and asked that £SO be added to it.—The board decided that Mr Corkery must go on with the work at the price tendered, or have his deposit returned, and fresh tenders called.—Mr Corkery accepted the deposit, and it was agreed to call for fresh tenders. ACCOUNTS, Accounts amounting to £231 0s Id were passed for payment. The board then rose.
