Passengers by a train from Wellington to the Hutt some time ago saw a horse do a queer thing. The horse was on the line, and when the engine drew near him he started off along the lino, though it was unfenced on one side. The horse outpaced the train, but pulled up until it neared him, and then he set oft again with great dash. Presently a river bridge checked his course along the line, and he sheered off to the beach. Instead of staying tlmrc, hoy/ovor, he dashed through the river, regained tho lino, and had another run ahead of the train until the cattle-stops near Potono checked him. The train was now close Upon Jiim, ami he leaped tho post and rails beside tho stop, and then ran into the sea to cool off. All maimer of things have been invented' to 'facilitate' the slaughter of opposing armies. Now the Germans have come to the fore with a combined rifle and lance. Tho Emperor has seen the article, but as yet has not given an opinion on tho matter. Tho utility of this weapon is that it enables cavalry soldiers to fire upon tho enemy previous to charging with the lance. Should, how, ever, the addition of the rillis make
