ANNUAL HOUSEHOLDERS MEETING.

The annual meeting of householders for the election of School Committees in the various school districts took place on Monday evening, April 25. SCOTSBURN. The annual meeting of householders of the Scotsburn school district was held in the school on Monday evening. Mr R. Thew, chairman of the school committee, occupied the chair. The minutes of the last annual meeting were read and confirmed. The report of the committee showed that the work of the school had been carried on by Mr Roskruge, the present teacher, to the entire satisfaction of the committee. The committee had held five ordinary meetings since 31st March, 1891, and four special meetings. The committee began the year with a credit balance of £l3 16s 3d; the total receipts to 31st of March, 1892, had been £3B 4s 9d, and the expenditure for the same period £3l 19s 3d, leaving a credit balance of £6 15s 3d. The standard examination was held on 2nd December, 1891, and from the inspector’s report it was shown that the school had passed a very good examination. The committee regretted that the attendance during the year had not been so good as they might expect, owing principally to the exceptionally wet weather, and many of the children having long distances to go to school. The attendance for the year just ended averaged daily 32.9, or nearly 33 ; the average number on the roll was 45, thus making the average number of absentees daily about 12. The committee impressed on parents the necessity of sending their children more regularly to school, and the chairman also read an extract from the inspector’s report in regard to regularity of attendance. On the motion of Mr Pithie, seconded by Mr Newman, the report and balancesheet as read was adopted. The following candidates were nominated as a committee for the ensuing y ear : —F. Newman, R. Thew, D. McKay, T. Pithie, G. Jenkins, H. McMaster, and H. Sowerby. There being no more nominations the above seven were declared duly elected. A vote of thanks to the chairman closed the meeting. A meeting of the newly-elected committee was then held, when Mr R. Thew was appointed chairman. PLEASANT VALLEY. At the public meeting Mr O’Connor was elected to the chair. The chairman of the outgoing committee read the annual report and balance-sheet, which was adopted. « To the Householders Pleasant Valley School District. « Gentlemen, —In accordance with the usual custom the retiring committee present their annual report —Since the last annual meeting the committee have held ten meetings. As you are aware, there has been a change of masters during the year, Mr Menzies having resigned and Mr O’Connor being appointed. Miss Mcßeth having been promoted to Moana resigned the mistress-ship, and Miss McGowan has received the appointment from the board. The school did not pass a very successful examination at the annual visit of the inspector, but this can be accounted for to a certain extent by the change in the staff of teachers. The fences have been trimmed, and the gorse grubbed ; the verandah has also been reflnored. Tenders were called for school cleaning last January, but there were no applicants, so it was decided that if the children were willing to perform the work they should do it, and be paid whatever the committee could afford. Prizes to the amount of £3 14s were distributed to the children last week. The basis of distribution was the inspector’s report. The sewing was judged by Mesdames Earle and Allan, The committee desire to record their thanks to these ladies for the trouble they took. The balance in bank at the beginning of the year was £1 6s Id, and on 31st March was £5 18s 3d : at present the balance is £3 16s. The balance to credit of treat and prize fund after last treat was 10s 6d, the concert held Last July left a . £1 15s 9d, making in all £2 12s sd. There is now a debit to thus fund of Is 2d. The books and vouchers were forwarded to the board’s auditor for inspection, and have been returned marked correct.— For and on behalf of committee, “ Kvrax Bboiuiv, Chairman.” The following gentlemen were nominated as committeemen for the ensuing year :—Messrs Brophy, Bull, D. Gregau, J, Gregan, Guilford, Lysaght, and Wallace, and were declared duly elected. At the subsequent meeting Mr Brophy was re-elected chairman of committee. FAIRLIE CREEK. At Fairlie Creek Messrs J. Milne, A. Morris, W. Close, J. Binney, H. Fraser, B. O’Connor, and J. Small were elected a committee for the ensuing year. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to the outgoing committee. Mr James Milne was unanimously re-elected chairman of committee, and Mr Win, Close secretary. SEADOWN. At the annual meeting of householders held at Scadowu only nine persons attended. Mr R. Campbell, chairman of the retiring committee, was voted to the chair, and after making a few introductory remarks called upon the secretary to read the annual report. This showed that the committee had £2O 0a lid to their credit in the bank, against which there were only three outstanding accounts. With this money the new committee were recommended to erect gymnastic apparatus and swings for the children, and to plant trees to protect the school ground, which is now bare and exposed. Two very successful concerts held during the year had greatly augmented the school funds, and bad enabled the committee to give a treat , and prizes to the children that would be hard to surpass in this education district. I The fact that at the annual examination j there were no failures showed that the teachers were doing their work in a highly satisfactory manner. The attendance, however, might be improved upon; <jn the average three-fourths of the children were absent. Irregular attendance, the committee pointed out, by necessitating the repetition of lessons, and by thus keeping back both the and the rest of his class, and

tends to injure not only the name of the of the teacher and his school, but also the children themselves. In conclusion the committee hoped that in the coming year the success of the school would be as marked as in the past. The following gentlemen were then elected a committee for the year : —Messrs Campbell, Hanifin, Cain, Taken, Hedley, McKenna, and F. O’Connell. Of these Mr Campbell was re-elected chairman at the ensuing meeting. At the same time it was derided to erect gymnastic apparatus and sw mgs, to plant three rows of trees round the school, and to hold the annual concert on May 12th. GERALDINE FLAT. At the annual meeting of householders of Geraldine Flat there was a small attendance. The report and balance-sheet of the outgoing committee and the chairman’s financial statement were considered satisfactory. Five nominations had been received for a new committee, the number required, and the chairman declared the following elected :—Messrs David Shaw, Joseph Lewis, Alexander Rose, George South, and James McQuillan. At the meeting of the newly-elected committee, Mr D. Shaw was unanimously re-elected chairman. He was also appointed to sign cheques. After the transaction of some routine business the meeting cloied. BELFIELD. Mr Halstead was in the chair. After routine, the chairman said that the attendance during the last three months of last year was not very satisfactory, being only an average of 119. The attendance improved again since the reopening of the school, and the average during the last three weeks, since the new master, Mr Strack, has taken it over, has been 141. After adopting the report and balance-sheet, which showed a credit balance of £4 19s 7d, and a vote of thanks to the retiring committee, moved by Mr Morris, the election of a committee for the ensuing year was proceeded with, and resulted as follows :—W.
