THE Temuka Leader. SATURDAY, APRIL 23, 1892. THE NEW GOVERNOR.

It is absolutely impossible for the Government to do anything right if we are to believe what their opponents say. The ' Government have decided to send the Hinemoa to Sydney to bring Lord Glasgow—our new Governor—to New Zealand, and this is made a peg on which to hang a thousand and one charges against the Government. The Auckland Herald accuses them of aiming at landing the Governor at Wellington first of all, and thus depriving other parts of that distinction. That of course is a silly accusation. What can it matter to the Government where he lands, so long as he reaches Wellington in time to perform certain functions before the meeting of Parliament 1 The charge is stupid, but, even if true, the seat of Government is the proper place for the Governor to land at. It is there he will meet his responsible advisers, and it is his duty to make their acquaintance before doing anything else. But the chief accusation made against the Government is that they want to curry favor with the Governor, so that he will put their nominees into the Legislative Council. This too is silly. If Lord Glasgow is so pliable that he can be influenced by any attentions the Government may pay him he is notfit to be Governor. It is absolutely insulting to the Governor to suggest such a thing. Now the facts are, so far as the Government is concerned, that they, through the Agent-General, applied for a man-of-war to convey His Excellency from Sydney to New Zealand, but the request was not granted. It is alleged that the man-of-war ships are not fit to carry passengers, and that the Governor's party could not be provided with comfortable quarters in them. The Govarnment then decided to send the Bineinoa to bring Lord Glasgow from Sydney to New Zealand, and because they have done so the vilest motives are attributed to them. It is extraordinary indeed that mere trifles of this nature are magnified into great faults. It is asserted that no previous Government did such a thing, but is that any reason why the present Government should not do it'? For our own part we think the matter too small to make so much of, but the fact that it has been made mountains of, shows the paltry character of the Opposition.
