Social.—A “ Free and Easy ” is advertised to be held in the Temnka Social Hall this evening. Football. The Canterbury Rugby Union decided not to join the proposed New Zealand Rugby Union, and will oppose its establishment. Primitive Methodist Church. — The services for to-morrow in connection with this Church will be found in our advertising columns. Temuka Rifles. Members of the Temnka corps are reminded that entries for the match on Monday close with the secretary, Lieutenant E. Whitehead, at G o’clock this evening. A Lesson.—At the Christchurch Resident Magistrate’s Court on Wednesdaymorning a man was fined £5 and costs £1 ICs for shooting a grey duck a day previous to the opening of the season, The Phonograph at Temuka.—Residents in the Temuka districts will have another opportunity of hearing Edison’s Marvellous Phonograph,or Talking Machine, next Tuesday evening. Since last visit more records have been added. Social at Temuka.—Next Monday evening a social will be held in the Temuka Volunteer Hall, under the auspices of the Temuka Fire Brigade. The social will give holiday-makers and others an opportunity of ending the day in a very pleasant manner. Nelson.—Captain Falconer has been most successful in removing the rocks impeding the entrance to the Nelson harbour, and last Wednesday night he was entertained at the club, when the mayor . and citizens presented him with a marble clock. Arrivals and Departures. The arrivals in the colony during March were 1483 and the departures 1653. From New South Wales 599 arrived and 757 left for that colony. There were 544 arrivals from Victoria and 478 left for that colony ; 156 came from Tasmania and 125 left for that island. : Obituary.—Mr W, E. Ivey, director of the Lincoln Agricultural College, died suddenly on Wednesday morning. The cause of death was apoplexy. He had been connected with the college for the past twelve years. His death is deeply regretted, as he was very popular among those who knew him. ' He was aged 54. Webster & Co., on account of the Public Trustee, in the estate of the late Mr Robert Jaqueman. The sale will start at 12 o’clock. Drowning Accident.—A young man named William Campbell, 22, was drowned at the Taieri Mouth, Otago, on Thursday. He left Akatore in a small boat to visit his mother, who lives at Taieri Mouth, and the boat was found capsized during the afternoon. It is supposed the boat was capsized while crossing the bar. It is said Campbell’s father was drowned a short time ago. Salvation Army.—ln our advertising columns will be found the Easter meetings arranged in connection with the Salvation Army. To-morrow evening there will be a special meeting; on Monday afternoon a council will be held, and in the evening a grand musical festival. Major Vince, and Captain Emily Forlong are announced to be present. Native Parliament. The Native Parliament was formally opened at Russell on Thursday, and was then adjourned till Tuesday to permit some Natives coming from the south to be present. The Hon. Mr Carroll, Hon. Mr Williams, Mr Lawry, M.H.R., and Archdeacon Clarke were present. They have over a hundred tons of provisions already waiting. Election of School Committees.— Householders are reminded that candidates for election as committeemen for the various school districts throughout South Canterbury, must be nominated, in accordance with the form prescribed in the Act, with the present chairmen of the school committees or commissioners of the districts, on or before Monday next. The election takes place on the 25th. Householders should study the advertisement which appears in another column in reference to the election. Sir George Grey.—Thursday being Sir George Grey’s eightieth birthday, the event was celebrated by a large demonstration of citizens in the Auckland City Hall. The gathering was to have taken place in the Albert Park but for the weather. Addresses of congratulation were presented by the Anti-Poverty Society and Liberal Association. Most of the local schools, including the Auckland College Grammar School, were granted a half holiday to enable the children to take part in the reception of Sir George. A large number of congratulatory telegrams were received from all parts of the colony. Retiring Officers. Mr G. S. Cooper, Under-Secretary for the Colony and Mr W. R. E. Brown, RegistrarGeneral, will retire almost immediately on pension, receiving three months salary in lieu of notice. In all probability Mr Hugh Pollen, chief clerk in the Colonial Secretary’s office will succeed Mr Cooper, and Mr B. Yon Dadelzsen, Deputy Registrar-General, will be the new Registrar-General. It is stated that in addition to Messrs Cooper and Brown several other civil servants of lesser rank are also about to retire. Overcrowding Sheep.—At a meeting of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals at Christchurch, on Thursday, the inspector reported having visited the steamer Kahn, which had arrived from the Chatham Islands with a cargo of sheep. He had found that 850 sheep had been taken aboard, and only 584 were landed alive. In tho oourso of a discussion it was stated that the sheep ■ on deck arrived safely, and that the deaths occurred among the sheep on the , ’tween decks. The committee unanimously decided that tho circumstances , ; warranted taking proceedings, and gave j instructions accordingly. |
