A Mother's Opimon,—A young man in I Fitzroy (Victoria), who applied to the J Registrar for a marriage certificate, gave . his age as twenty years, and was informed * that on account of his extreme youthfulness he would have to secure his parents' written consent before a certificate could be issued. He went, and soon returned with a brief but pointed document : " This is to certify that my son Johnhas my consent to marry Ann ,or any other woman. He is young in years but old in devilment." Breach of Promise. A breach of promise case, tried at Hokitika, resulted in a verdict for £SO. The plaintiff a nicelooking young girl, had been wooed by an amorous policeman, whose ardour somewhat cooled when he became acquainted with a substantial widow, the proprietress of a comfortable hotel. She proved too much for the susceptible policeman, and the first love was left forlorn. The case was not defended, and it simply resolved itself into the amount of damages to be awarded. The Judge said he did not believe in breach of promise cases, aB he thought the women were well rid of the men who did not want them, but whilst the law was in its present state, he would act upon it.
