MOUNT PEEL ROAD BOARD.

A meeting of the Mount Peel Road Board was held at their office on Friday, March 18th. All the members were present. A long discussion took place on Mr Talbot’s letter re the shingle shifting, after which Mr Tripp proposed and Mr Thew seconded—“ That the Board write thanking Mr Talbot for his sensible letter, which will be read at the ratepayers’ .meeting to be held on May 5 th. The Board will be glad if he can attend to explain matters more fully than the ratepayers at present understand.” An amendment was proposed by Mr McKay, seconded by Mr J. D. Acland : “ That the board thank Mr Talbot for his letter, and the position he has taken in regard to the shifting of the shingle, and approve of his action in reference to the same.” On being put to the meeting, the amendment was carried. The following resolutions were carried ; “ That the annual meeting of ratepayers be held on Thursday, May sth, at noon, the election to be held on same day,” “ That the extra shingling on Ferguson’s road, as suggested by the overseer, be done.” “ That Mr Hamilton be allowed to erect gates on the Clayton road, subject to the usual conditions.” “ That the overseer attend to the overflow on the Gorge road.” “ That the overseer attend to the damage done by floods to the Mount Peel road, near Mr Acland’s hut.” Mr Smith offered the board £5 for the timber on Terrace road.—The overseer to inspect, and accept offer if fair. Accounts were passed for payment, £67 19s 4d. ACCIDENTS, OFFENCES, ETC. The body of the young man named Perkins, who was missed last week, was found in the Ruamahanga river, a long way down, after a diligent search. The fresh had washed the corpse away and lodged it in the branches of a tree, A man named Blackler, who has been under treatment in the Masterton Hospital for supposed poisoning by sheep dip, has succumbed after lingering many weeks, Duhkdin, March 26. Thomas Forsyth, a young man, was killed at Kinloch yesterday, by the capsizing of a sledge load of firewood. Port Chalmers, March 27. At 6 p.m. on Saturday, when Captain Jones, of the barque Sandanah, who had been ashore at the pilot station for orders, was returning to the ship, his boat capsized in the rip. The captain and four men managed to get on to the boat’s bottom and cling there until rescued by Pilot Milne and his boat s crew, who were very prompt in rendering assistance. One man, unfortunately, was drowned.
