THE MARKETS. The Canterbury Farmers’ Association Limited, report as under: — Wheat—New season’s grain is now coming to hand freely, but in most cases though dry is badly sprouted, and in many instances is only fit for whole fowl wheat. To-day’s values are—3s 9d to 3s lOd for prime tuscan, velvet, or pearl, 3s 5d to 3s 7d for sprouted but dry samples, 3s 8d to 3s 9d for prime red chaff, 3s 3d to 3s 5d for sprouted, whole fowl wheat 2s 9d to 3s—all on trucks Timaru. Oats—Oats are discolored and grown worse than the samples offering this time last year. Values are—ls 7jd to Is B|d for prime milling, Is to Is 7d for short feed, Is 6|d to Is 8d for tartars and duns, and Is 5d to Is 7d for danish and short feed—all f.0.b., Timaru. Ryegrass and Cocksfoot —Good heavy samples of ryegrass (machine dressed) are being sold at from 2s 6d to 3s f.0.b., Timaru. Cocksfoot 3d to 3jd. Potatoes—We have an enquiry from Sydney for 300 tons for delivery next month at about 30s f.o.b. ENGLISH AND FOREIGN MARKETS London, March 17. New Zealand 4 per cent, inscribed stock, 104; 3J per cent, do, 93 J. New Zealand long-berried wheat, 42s 9d; market improving. Mutton, Wellington, 4|d; Canterbury lamb, 6Jd. Beef, hindquarters, 4§d. The hemp market is dull and there have been no sales of late. South Australian wheat 43s‘ 6d, market weaker; Victorian do 42s Gd, weaker. The Antwerp wool sales have closed. Competition was very flat, and nearly all the Australian wool was consequently withdrawn. . At a meeting of the Bank of England shareholders Mr Lidderdale, the governor, said the dividend would be 5 per cent. The total amount of Baring’s liabilities had proved to be £30,000,000. Eight millions worth of assets had been realised so far, and there would apparently be a surplus of £3,000,000. He did not believe that the guarantors would suffer. The outlook in the Argentine was favorable, and he advised them to realise slowly. Australian and New Zealand shippers complain of the volume of exports being diminished. Washington, March 18. A copper ring has been formed in America to restrict the output. Lisbon, March 19. Five banks in Oporto have suspended payment, and it is expected that all will fail unless the leading banks amalgamate. St. Petersburg, March 17. The liabilities of Gunsberg’s Bank amount to £20,000,000.
