TEMUKA SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —I see by your report of meeting of the above committee in Thursday's issue that they expressed a hope that parents would see their way to contribute regularly towards the fuel and stationery fund, as the incidental allowance was quite inadequate to make both ends meet. The charges made for this fund are not legal, and contrary to the letter and spirit of the Education Act, and a source of great annoyance to working men with large families. I am charged over one pound a year for this fund; add*to this the cost of books and other other requisites, and you have a mighty big slice off a working man's occasional 5s a day for the so-called compulsory free education of his children. The men, or body of men, who cannot make both ends meet with a certain income, big on little, are incapables. All they have to do is to cut their coat according to their cloth. If the cloth is not sufficient to make a longtailed coat, make a red jacket. Any sort of fools could spend money if other people find plenty of it for them. The committee had a strong muster of their friends at the last election to prevent any working man getting in. If men will press themselves into a position they have not the capacity to fill, I say let them dip their hands into their own pockets; I, for one, will take precious good care that they shall not get into mine.—l am, etc, Working Man.
