THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH, GERALDINE.
The alterations to “ St. Mary’s in the Bush” Roman Catholic Church, Geraldine, are now completed, and the greatly improved appearance of the building, both inwardly and outwardly, does credit to the architect (Mr A. White), and the contractor (Mr T. Scott). Under an increasing congregation Father Treacy and the members of the Church had long felt the need of better accommodation. To the rev. gentleman’s appeal for help - the members responded liberally, and now instead of being compelled to tread on each others toes to gain access to the seats, they will have ample room and more convenience than hitherto. The old sanctuary and sacristy have been shifted back, and 24 feet more have been added to the nave, so that the latter now measures 64 feet long by 28 feet wide. The sacristy and confessionals show several improvements on the old, and are 12 feet x 13 feet in size, and have projecting gables. The sanctuary is 14 feet x 18 feet, half hexagon, and is varnished throughout, and has two stained-glass ornamental windows on cither side, and a circular light over the main altar. The plastering was done by Mr A, Berry, Geraldine, and the painting by Mr T, Sullivan, Timaru. The ceiling, crossbeams, dado, and gallery have been re-varnished, and the walls now bear a pleasant light blue tint, with the mouldings, cornices, and minor supports set off in white. The exterior of the building has also been repainted in its original color, and the addition of two gables gives it a morn finished appearance than it ever had before. It is the intention of the congregation to still add to the beauty of this neat little church in the bush by erecting in place of the present vestibule a proportionately tall belltower with a bell, and to fasten a cross to each gable, which will give the building “ the finishing touch.” For the interior new seats will be provided, and an altar rod is being made for the sanctuary, but will not be in position for the opening day. Great credit is due to Father Treacy for his energy in raising the money for this improvement, which benefits not only the congregation connected with St. Mary’s Church, but is an acquisition to the township. Mr White
was very exact in his plans, and the contractor, Mr T. Scott deserves credit for his woi’k. Bishop Grimes arrives on Saturday afternoon at Geraldine, and will formally open the church ou Sunday-, morning at 11 o’clock.
