A housemaid at Dresden has been sentenced to three months’ imprisonment on a charge of high treason. The Cologne Gazette, commenting on the prosecution of the press, asserts that nothing is more harmful to the throne than enforced silence throughout the nation.

The people of Poland are much alarmed at the demands made by General Gourko, the GovernorGeneral, who desires a free hand in order -to strike terror among the malcontents. The Czar has granted him increased powers. London, March G.
The St. Petersburg correspondent of the Daily Telegraph wires that in consequence of the ferment arising out of the increased powers granted by the Czar to General Gourko, the latter has been authorised to proclaim a state of siege in Warsaw and martial law throughout Poland. Bombay, March?.
It is stated that since August 94.000 deaths above the average have been recorded in Madras Presidency owing'to famine.
