FOOTBALL.
TEMUKA FOOTBALL CLUB. The annual meeting of the Temuka Football Club took place in the Wallingford Hotel on Saturday evening last. There were about forty persons present, and the greatest enthusiasm prevailed throughout the meeting. There was every appearance of the club being stronger this season than ever. Mr J. Anderson (captain) occupied the chair. After a few preliminary remarks, the chairman requested the secretary (Mr J. Gillespie) to read tine balance-sheet, which showed the receipts during the year to have amounted to £25 12s 2d. The principal items were: Members’ subscriptions, £lO 13s 6d; officers’ donations, £6 13s; second social, £5 11s; dinner to Linwood team, £1 12s. The remainder was made up of smaller items. The sum of £2 18s is still due to the club. The expenditure amounted to £23 9s 6d, which left the sum of £2 2s 8d in hand, in addition to the amount outstanding. It might be remarked that some accounts from the previous year were paid, so the club may well be corhplimented on its financial position. The balance-sheet was received with applause, and, after some conversation, on the motion of Mr Carr, seconded by Mr Storey, it was adopted. The report was read as follows: “ Temuka Football Club. Report for season 1891. Gentlemen, —The Committee have much pleasure in presenting to you the annual report and balance- , sheet for the past season. Whilst they cannot compliment the club on the high position it held during last season on the football field, they can, with pleasure, compliment it on the sound financial position it occupies now, more especially seeing that we began the season with a debit balance of £2 5s 6d. Not only has this been been paid off, but we have now a balance of £2 2s 8d to our credit in the bank, which, added to a former balance of 6s 6d, makes a total credit balance of £2 9s 8d to carry on this season with. Last year we were severely handicapped by the ground—it being rough, and not close and handy for practice. Our club has all along suffered from a general want of energy and enthusiasm shown by individual members, and this in part accounts for the low position it has held during the past few years in football games. We have this season quite as good an opening as last, and we sincerely trust that members will throw themselves into the game heartily, and that at the end of the season we may look back on our career with pride. The club played eleven matches, won four, lost six, and one was drawn. Our second fifteen had a much more successful season, being beaten only twice and drawing three times. Our annual foreign match on the Queen’s Birthday, with Linwood, was a good game and drew a great many spectators. We look forward to a similar good game this Queen’s Birthday. During the season our energetic secretary, Mr W. M. Storey, resigned, and Mr J. Gillespie filled the vacancy till the end of the season. In conclusion, we wish to tender our sincere thanks to M. Quinn Esq., for the use of the ground, to our worthy president, Mr J. Hayhurst, for his liberal donation, and to all other donors to the club. We trust that this season may prove a profitable and enjoyable one, and wish the new officers and captain and club every success. Signed, J. H. Anderson, Captain. Jas. Gillespie, Hon. Secretary.” The report was adopted. Mr J. McOaskill proposed a hearty vote of thanks to the patron, president, vice-presidents, captain, vice captain, secretary, and committee, which was carried with acclamation, Mr A. E. G. Rhodes, M.H.R., was reelectedpatron, and Mr J. T. M. Hayhurst president. It was resolved to re-elect the vice-presidents, and add Messrs T. Oheyne Farnie, W. Storey, J. M. Twomey, F. Dignan, W. McLeod, D. Henry, and J. Findlay, to their number. Mr J. Anderson was re-elected captain, and Mr J, Gillespie vice-captain. Mr J. McCasloll was elected secretary and treasurer. The ballot for the committee resulted in Messrs Mendelson, MeCallum, Findlay, and Armitage being elected. Mr Mendelson was appointed to represent the club on the Rugby Union. Mr Gillespie to act in Mr Mendelson’s absence. It was resolved to allow the subscription to stand at five shillings. Five new members were proposed. It was decided to open the football season on the 19th March. The meeting terminated with a vote of thanks to the chair. COMMITTEE MEETING,

A vote of thanks was passed to the chairman and the meeting terminated. WAIHI FOOTBALL CLTJR, A meeting of those interested in the Waihi Football OJub was held in the Winchester Public Hall on sth inst., commencing at 8 o’clock. Over twenty gentlemen were present. Mr H. F, Harte was chosen as chairman, The chairman in a few remarks dwelt on the success of the dub during the past season and wished them good luck for the future. The secretary intimated that he was, unable to place a balance sheet before them, so many small sums due by some of the member*} from last season having not yet been paid. Tho election of officers then took place as follows Patron, A. E. G. Rhodes, Esq., M.H.R.; President, Mr R. Wakely; Vice-Presidents, Messrs H. E. Smith, R. Smith, T. Langdown, J. Mclntosh, F. Barker, and H. F. Harte ; Captain, Mr F. W. Shallard; ViceCaptain, Mr Geo. Turnbull; Secretary, Mr F. W. Shallard; Treasurer, Mr T. L. Hart; Selection Committee, Messrs H. E. Smith, T. L. Hart, and Win. Stewart; General Committee, Messrs. F. W. Shallard,. G. Turnbull, T, L. Hart, A. Opie, A. Bell, W, Moore, and H. E,
Smith; Delegate to Rugby Union, Mr H. E. Smith. Subscriptions, senior members, ss; junior members, 2s 6d. The secretary read a letter from Mr H. E. Smith, regretting through illness not being able to attend, and suggesting the club should consist of two teams, and both to be entered for the Football Tournament to be held at the Caledonian Society’s gathering, . Timaru, on May 24th 1892. Also that by a social or some other means the club procure funds to erect a dressing tent on the ground, the material for same to cost £5 or £6, Mr R. Smith, amidst applause, volunteered to erect the room if the club found the necessary material. Decided re obtaining material for dressing room, that it be left in the hands of the committee, Mr R. Smith adding that they be recommended to hold a social as the best way of defraying the cost of building. Resolved, as suggested by Mr H. E. Smith, that two teams be sent to compete at the Football Tournament. It was agreed that the club begin practising as soon as possible in order to be in form for the return matches with Sydenham and Leeston; and that the arrangements regarding the above matches be left in the hands of the committee; also decided that members should meet for practice on the 12th inst., commencing at 4 o’clock; and that after the game the selection committee choose 20 men to go in for training for the Christchurch matches, which will most likely take place about - Easter. Mr R. Smith proposed that the club’s delegate be instructed to urge on the Rugby Union the necessity for having more trial practices before an interprovincial match takes place, giving as his reason that a want of combination accounted in a great measure for the defeats South Canterbury had sustained at the hands of other teams. With more practice together the members would trust each other more, and consequently there would be less individual effort and more combination used. Mr Smith’s proposition received general approval. A hearty vote of thanks to the chairman terminated the proceedings.
