DISTRESS ON THE CONTINENT.
London, March 2. Distress among the lower classes in large cities on the Continent is increasing. Murders are increasing in Vienna. Berlin, March 1. Five thousand people in Stettin are reported to be in a state of destitution., March 8. The Socialists disclaim any connection with the reoent riots in the city. Many of those who took part in the recent riots have written to the Emperor, expressing lyalty to the Crown and regret for the disturbances. Vienna, Peasants in the famine distri cts of Hungary are liv- Qn the bark of tress and p"* „ rpi- x .-iie. _ue bread riot was quelled with difficulty. Great efforts are being made to assist those in distress. The number of starving persons applying for gifts of bread has reached 12,000, and piteous scenes are constantly occurring. There were last year in France 19 letters for eac|h inhabitant; in England each inhabitant got 45; in the United States, 30 ; and in Germany, 22.
