Sydney, March 2. The Customs Duties Bill was read a , third time in the Legislative Council ( by 21 to 22.-' In the course of an interview Lord Onslow denied that any promise had been given by the Secretary of State for the colonies to submit the name of his successor to the New Zealand Government for their approval, but one or two names were suggested to him (Onslow) for his private opinion. With regard to New Zealand affairs he considered the colony offered an enormous field for the investment of small capital, but he thought it would never be a place for great capitalistic ventures. After the hearing of Chinese case yesterday the parties to the suit indulged in a street row. This led to thepolicemaking some inquiries during which information was elicted leading to the belief that the whole affair was '. planned by a secret society. It is reported that this society sentenced to death a young Chinaman who is taking an active part in the anti-gambling, crusade, £SO being offered for his assassination. March 2. Mr Toohy, member for Sydney, south, who was expelled from the House on the night of Wednesday, for disobeying the ruling of the Chairman during the discussion of the estimates in Committee, has issued a writ claiming £2OOO as damages from the chairman, Mr Booth. The Sydney Morning Herald and Daily Telegraph devote leading articles to Lord Onslow's Governorship of New Zealand. Melbourne, March 2. G. N. Taylor, ex-Manager of the Land Credit Bank, received two years imprisonment for fraud. The Rev. Mr Nial has been elected President of the Wesleyan Conference. Mr Munro has left for England to assume the duties of Agent-General for the colony. Newcastle, March 2. O'Neil and Sydney, directors of the Northumberland Bank, were acquitted on the charge of fraud. Low and Hadfield were found guilty and remanded for sentence. Launceston. March 3. Mr Home, late accountant of this branch of the Union Steam Ship Company of New Zealand, has been acquitted on the charge of falisfying the books of the Tasmanian Steam Navigation Company.
