James Stillie, the Edinburgh bookseller, is said to be the only man now living in that city who knew Sir Walter Scott. When a boy he carried proofs to Abbotsford, and thus first encountered Scott, whom he afterwards came to know well. He says that “ Scott didn’t know what pride was,” and had a kind word for everybody.
