CHRISTCHURCH WOOL SALES.

At the wool sales at Christchurch on Friday 3400 bales were offered, principally merino clips, only a small proportion of crossbred being from the ' Chatham Islands, Competition was less keen than at the earlier sales. Values, in sympathy with those ruling in London, were easier, especially for merino. Prices ruled as follows :—Merino, 4fd to 6;|d; crossbreds, 5d to B^d; pieces, 3d to 6d; locks, Id to 3£d; scoured merino, 9|d to 14d. ENGLISH AND FOREIGN MARKETS. London, Feb. IS. One hundred cases of green Cape Muscat grapes were sold at 3Jd to 54 per lb. Those packed in cork were in the best condition. The merchants consider that the demand for grapes is limited. Peaches are unchanged. A cargo of Australian wheat, January shipment, has been sold at 41s. Three months’ bills discounted 2| per cent. New Zealand four per cent, inscribed stock, 100; three and a-half ditto, 90. New Zealand long berried wheat firm at 43s 9d. Frozen mutton, Canterbury, 4Jd; Wellington, 4£d ; Canterbury lamb, 61d. Beef, hindquarters, 4Jd. Six hundred bales of New Zealand hemp have been sold at slightly easier price. Fair to medium quality is quoted at £22 per ton. South Australian wheat is firmer at 445, Victorian steady at 43s 6d. For Australian wheat on passage sellers ask 40s 9d, buyers offer Is less. Consignees complain that the butter shipped as first class is really second quality, and that there is a great scarcity of choice qualities. The balance of factory shipment ex Aorangi has been disposed of from 110 s to 115 s; ex Orotava from 106 s to ll2s. A portion of that ex Maori was heated before shipping. Owing to the frost and the scarcity of Danish butter, prices have risen 4s. The American visible supply of wheat is 04,800,000 bushels. Feb. 19. The assets and liabilities of Marietta and Company have been transferred to a realisation company* The Tasmanian Treasury bills are all subscribed. William Perry and Company, merchants, of Sydney, are calling a meeting of their creditors. The liabilities are put down at £120,000, and the supposed surplus is stated at £IO,OOO. Feb. 20. New Zealand cheese is quoted at 545. The Canterbury Farmers’ Co-operative have received ,the following cablegram from their London office, dated 19th February -The present value of wheat cargoes is Is per quarter dearer. The market is affected by higher prices in America.
