LABOUR.
London, Feb. 16. The Durham coal owners have given their employees a fortnight’s notice. Sixteen thousand engineers on the Tyne and Wear are out on strike. There are many dissentients in their ranks. The coalminers are resuming work. The Morning Post says that the strike has injured the Coal Miners’ Union, and that many of the members are seceding. Feb. 17. The coalheavers have all resumed work. A Rural Laborers’ League has been formed. Madrid, Feb. 17. The Strike at Bilbao has terminated. Rome., Peb. 15. His Holiness the Pope urges the French Government to foster the interests of the laboring population. Sydney, Feb. 17.
The Eight Hours Bill has passed the Lower House, The compulsory and penalty clauses were omitted and the Bill merely asserts the principle. Although the labor party are not united, arrangements have been arrived at whereby a conference of labour members will be held whenever questions affecting labor legislation crops up.
A Scotch boatman whilo crossing a loch was asked if he' would cake some water with his whisky, and replied : “No, there was a horse drooned at the head o’ the loch twa years ago.” The head of the loch was 24'miles distant,
