Melbourne, Feb. 14. During the season just closed 2143 tons of butter were exported from this colony, which realised Is per lb. This is more than double the quantity exported in the previous season, and it is estimated that 3000 tons will be sent away next season. Adelaide, Feb. 12. The harvest returns show a total of 7,373,000 bushels, as against 9,391,000 bushels for the previous year. The surplus available for export is estimated at 4,000,000 bushels. The poorness of the yield is due to a small rainfall, severe frosts, and the prevalence of the red rust pest. ENGLISH AND FOREIGN MARKETS’ London, Feb, 11. Three months bills have advanced | par cent. New Zealand 4 per cent, inscribed stock 100; 3i per cent, ditto, 91f. There is an increased firmness in the wheat market, but prices are unchanged. A general rise of jd has taken place in
New Zealand frozen mutton; lamb is quoted at fid. New Zealand hemp is in moderate demand at previous rates. The butter market is steadier. The consignment ex Aorangi fetched from 86s to 112 s per cwt. Feb. 13. Mr B. R. Wise, M.L.A. for Sydney South, on behalf of the Pastoral and Financial Association, and Geddes and Company, of Sydney, have arranged with a combination of ship-owners and producers to export from Sydney on special terms 6000 carcases of frozen meat weekly. The arrangements will begin about the end of the year. Colonial stocks are firmer, owing to a cablegram stating that the associated banks in Melbourne are taking up the Victorian Treasury bills, which is regarded as showing an intention to borrow locally.
