PUNEDIN STOCK MARKETS.
At theßurnsldp Market on Wednesday the following figsßiess was transacted Fat Cattle —Notwithstanding the block on the railway lines, on account of the floods, the market was over supplied, no less than 269 head being yarded, and of this number quite 240 head were forced on the market by unfortunate sufferers on the Taieri plain. Several of the larger buyers were not operating this week, and as a consequence the sale was a dull one, and prices, as compared with last week’s, from 15s to 20s per head lower. Best bullocks, £7 7s 6d to £9 ; ordinary, £0 to £7 ; small, £4 10s to £5 10s ; best cows, £6 to £0 15s; ordinary, £4 to £5 10s; old, £2 to £3 10Bf
] Fat Sheep—Only 1069 penned, and these included a few pens of very prime crossbred wethers (heavyweights). For best pens thex-e was good competition at: slightly better values than were ruling a | week ago, but other qualities show no change. Best crossbred wethers sold at 14s to 15s 3d ; ordinary do do, 12s Gd to 13s Gd ;• light do do, 10s Gd to 12s ; best crossbred ewes, 13s to 14s ; ordinary do do, 8s Gd to 10s. Fat Lambs—399 penned, and sold at fi’om 8s to 10s Gd. Pigs—3o forward, including a few pens of nice bacon pigs, which sold at from 34s to 38s. Bacon pigs and well-bred grown stores are scarce and wanted, and very full values are being paid for them in this market. DUNEDIN WOOL SALES. Dunedin Feb. 11. At the wool sales crossbred fetched to 9{d, merinos to 7jd : a general decline of £d to Id. WANGANUI RAM FAIR. Wanganui, Feb. 10. The first day’s sale at Messrs Freeman R. Jackson and Co.’s ram fair was a great success. There was a large attendance from all parts of the coast, and bidding was brisk and rapid. 552 rams were sold singly, averaging £5 Is 5d each. Jas. S. Homes topped the market for studs with 3Ggs, and William Wilson, Elslea, foxflocks with 17gs for two. In larger numbers, J. Raynor, Wairax-apa, made the highest average, £8 4s lOd, for twelve flocks; J. W. Baker, Fordell, got an average of £7 0s 8d for twenty-five flocks, and J. Wilson, Elslea, averaged £6 18s 9d for sixty. AUSTRALIAN MARKETS. Sydney, Feb. 10. Wheat—Milling, 4s 9d to 5s per bushel. Flour—Stone makes, £ll 5s to £ll 15s ; roller brands, £l2 5s to £l2 10s per ton. Oats—Best, 2s 4d to 2s Bd. Maize, 2s 3d. Barley, 2s 9d to 3s. Peas, 3s 7d. Bran, lid. Pollard, 9Jd per bushel. Potatoes —Warrnambools, £3 15s; Tasmanian, £4 10s. Onions, £3 10s to £4 10s per ton. Butter—Dairy made, lOd ; factory, Is 2d to Is 5d per lb. Bacon, 5d to 7d ; hams, New Zealand, lOd to lid per lb. Melbourne, Feb. 10. Wheat—Firm at 4s to 4s 4d per bushel. Flour—Stone makes, £9; roller brands, £9 15s per ton. Bran lOd, pollard Is per bushel. Barley— Cape, 3s 6d ; English malting, 3s 6d to 4s 6d per bushel. Bran Is, pollard is Id per bushel. ENGLISH AND FOREIGN MARKETS. London, Feb. 9. Wool is unchanged. Feb. 10. The total quantity of wheat and flour afloat for the United Kingdom is 2,908,000 quarters, and for the Continent 1,156,00 Q quarters. At the half-yearly meeting of the Bank of New Zealand the Hon. Mr Glyn, the chairman, said that the deposits had increased and that the credit was improving. £20,000 was expected to be carried over to next year. The chairman said that the new taxation did not affect the bank, though it would considerably affect the Estates Company. The bank was reducing advances in Australia, believing it to be risky in the present state of affairs there. The Bank had not suffered by the failures in Australia. The estimated visible supply of American wheat is 66,600,000 bushels. The majority of the peaches imported from the Cape were spoiled by low temperature. The rest brought from 14s to 18s per dozen. The nectarines were inferior, and realised only 2s 6d per dozen. The grapes were also inferior. They brought 12s per 445 b. Merchants think that even these prices were only reached because Cape fruit is a novelty, and they are not likely to be maintained. Tomatoes fetched 3d per lb. Factory-made butter, 112 s: dairy-made, 92s to 100 s.
Austrian and Italian dairies are sending over large quantities of butter and depressing the market. Heavy sales of colonial stocks are being effected, and there is a general fall of 10s. The issue of Treasury bills is the chief cause of the depression, Feb. 11. Prices at the wool sales for crossbred fine greasy average |d lower. Coarse scoured remain at par. Lambs at par to id higher. Merino greasy, superior, par to £d, average Jd, Inferior, $d to £d. Scoured good average sd, inferior Id lower. Lambs greasy superior |d dearer, other sorts Jd lower. The market is steady. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, Christchurch, have received the following cable message dated London, s3th just.:— Wool— Since t}ie date of th§ last telegram nearly ajl descriptions have declined id per lb, except fine crossbred and Jaipbsj, for which the market is unchanged, and coarse crossbred, for which the market is easier. The American demand is good, but wools of a faulty character are neglected. The total quantity catalogued to date is 164,000 bales, and the total quantity withdrawn to date is 15,000 bales. lYheat—There is an improved feeling.
