ANGLICAN GENERAL SYNOD.
Wellington, Feb. 5
This afternoon the Anglican Synod was occupied in debating the following motion, brought forward by Archdeacon Harper, of Timaru :—" That in the opinion of this Synod it is desirable that the Education Act should be so amended as to contain a provision for grants in aid of the maintenance of schools set on foot by any religious denomination, provided that the secular instruction given in such schools shall come up to the required standard, and satisfy the Government Lispector; and further that the Legislature be petitioned to the foregoing effect."
Archdeacon Mules moved an amendment to the resolution " That as denominational schools can only be maintained in large centres of population, provision should be made for the imparting of religious instruction by the teachers in public Bchools, and that the Legislature be petitioned to the foregoing effect."
The amendment was lost on a division by 24 to 11, and Archdeacon Harper's motion carried on the voices.
