GENERAL SUMMARY. A band of Anarchists from the district surrounding Xeres attacked that town on the night of January 8, for the purpose of pillage. The gens d’armes were waiting for the party, however, and a sharp fight ensued. The Anarchists renewed the conflict after being repulsed, and kept it up till morning, when the military took a hand in the affair, and the assailants fled. They were pursued, and a great many were captured, to whom summary justice will be dealt. The attack was commenced as people were leaving the theatres. For arms the rioters had fowling pieces and scythes, with which they cut down citizens in every direction. Three of the band were killed, and twenty seriously injured in the melee . Attacks were made on the barracks and the Town Hall simultaneously. The audacity displayed in invading a city in which a battalion of infantry and a squadron of cavalry were quartered is regarded as alarming and inexplicable. Oliver Payne, the French explorer, who was captured in the Soudan by the Mahdi, fell from a camel recently, it is reported, while feeble from the effects of fever, and was burnt alive to save further trouble. Mr Gladstone, replying to a correspondent inquiring as to the position of the labor question in Parliament if the Irish members are withdrawn, says (( the fear that British labor will be unable to fight its own battle without the Irish members is entirely visionary.”
