LABOUR.
Madrid, Jan, 27. Five hundred miners who went out
on strike at Bilbao raised a riot, and 4 tile military, who had to be summoned, were conjielled to fire in order to disperse the mob. Many of the rioters were wounded. A state of seige has been declared in Bilbao, where the miners are out on strike. They are defying the law. All the mines are shut down, and are guarded by the police and military. Sydney, Jan, 27. The Labor Electoral League Conference has resolved to add the abolition of the Upper House and the substitution of the Swiss principle of referendum as planks of the platform. Motions were carried favouring the prohibition of subletting contracts and the exclusion of inferior races. Motions providing for State socialism and abolishing party government were rejected. Wellington, Jan. 28. At a meeting of the Trades and Labor Council to night the following resolution was passed;—That the secretary be instructed to inform the Government that this council claims the right of Trade Unions to be consulted in regard to the selection and appointmfent of labour representatives to the Legislative Council.
