FATAL FIRE.

Christchurch, Jan. 15. A fire broke out last night in the dwelling of Mr F. C. Raphael, and before the flames were got under the house was completely gutted, and little was saved. A number of valuable ; pictures were destroyed. Ths family, consisting of two brothers and three sisters, and a visitor escaped in their night dresses, but the servant, Jane Blackrnore, who was sleeping in the western side of the house, evidently did not wake. An alarm was raised by the brothers, and a ladder procured, and Mr McLean of the Press office, entered the burning building through a window, and found the girl on the floor, partly stupefied with smoke. He succeeded in getting her out, and in doing so both fell on the iron roof of a lean-to in which the fire was burning. The girl remained on the roof but McLean rolled off on to the asphalt path. He was not hurt, but the girl was severely burned from lying on the hot roof without clothes. Medical assistance was procured, and the doctor’s opinion was that she cannot survive, as all her skin is burned off. The insurances are £I2OO in the Standard, £SOO re-insqred in the Union, Later. The girl Blackrnore, who was burned, in the fire on Thursday night, died from her injuries at 4.40 this morning. Bhe had been in the service of the family for about nine months, and bore an excellent character. She had given notice to leave, as she was about to be married. She was about twenty-one years of age. The insurances were £450 on the building, £SOO on the furniture, £55 on the piano, £25 on a shed ; total £IO3O, in the Standard Office. Of this amount one-third was re-insured in the Union, and one-third in the National.
