NEW YORK KIDNAPPING.
A conspiracy to kidnap the grandchild of Jay Gould, of Central Park, New York, has been frustrated. Ihe New York correspondent of an English contemporary says : About a year ago I mentioned in these columns the perils to which the children of the leading millionaires were subjected here while taking their daily airing in Central Patk. The latter is bordered at certain points by streets belonging to the worst quarters of the town, and nothing would be easier than for any desperate man to snatch up a child and make his escape therewith into the slums of this great city. (Surrounded as the latter is on three sides by water, escape would present but little difficulty, and indeed a crime of this character would not only be exceedingly easy of perpetration, but would also piesent almost certain prospects of a great pecuniary result. Parents are ready to consent to almost any conditions in order to retain possession of their offspring, and to pay not only heavy ransoms, but even to promise immunity from punishment to the kidnappers. That the conspiracy just frustrated by the New York police authorities has been of a serious nature is demonstrated by the fact that for the past ten days a special force of constables has been detailed to keep an eye on the children of the Vanderbilts, the Goulds, the Rockefellers, and others, and the nurses and governesses of those families have been invariably followed during the past week by two or three private detectives.
It is difficult to conceive that the beautiful dog star is a globe much larger than our sun, yet it is a fact that Sirius is a sun many times more mighty than our own. This splendid star, which even in our most powerful telescopes appears as a mere point of light, is in reality a globe emitting so enormous a quantity of light and heat that were it to take the place of onr sun, every creature on the earth would be consumed by its burning rays. The best medicine known is Sandek and Sons’ Eucalypti Extract. Test its eminent powerful effects in coughs, colds, influenza; the relief is instantaneous.
