BENEVOLENT AID CASES.

Dunedin, Dec. 30. At the Benevolent Trustees’ meeting, the disclosures made as the result of the inspector’s visit to some parts of the country district, resulted in a saving of £7 9s fid per week. In such instances assistance had been granted on the recommendation of the local body. In one case a woman of sixty-two owns a cottage, 11 acres of land, and 6 cows, has three daughters at service and a boy at home. Relief was discontinued. A man 66 years of age, living in a house of his own, was found to be of drunken habits and able to earn his own living if he liked. Allowance stopped. A man and his wife, 73 and 71, were living on 22 acres of freehold, free from mortgage, and were found to have £2BO on deposit in the bank ; a son, married, in business. Allowance stopped. A widow living in her own house, free of mortgage ; one daughter earning £llO a year as a teacher, another daughter at service, another in Fiji, with four children at home. Allowance reduced to 5s per week. A woman of 63, stopping with her son-in-law, who is a hotelkeeper, able to work. Allowance stopped. A widow, 36, living on a residence area, has two boys earning 15s per week, with six other children at home. She earns 6s of 7s per week for washing, and receives £lO a year for cleaning the school. Reduced from 20s to 7s 6d. These are cases typical of a number of others. In some cases, men apd women living alone were given the option of entering the institution.
