NEW YEAR’S DAY.
GOOD TEMPLARS’ PICNIC. The united picnic under the auspices of the Temuka and Geraldine Good Templar Lodges was held in Mr Woodley’s paddock, Winchester, on New Year’s Day, when there were .between three and four hundred people on the A ground. The members of the Temuka ■ Lodge assembled at the Social Hall at about 8.30, and shortly had in order for a start. The band comfortable quarters in one ■ of Aspinall & Co.’s waggons, Patrick McGillan. as Jehu, members and friends were disposed sorts of conveyances, driven for the part by the officers of the Order. starting for Winchester they through the town, and with band and standards waving presented quite enlivening spectacle. A number of people drove up later on in private conveyances^ Six public conveyances and a * number of private traps loaded with , picnickers left Geraldine punctually at 10 o’clock with banners and, flags waving in the air. On arrival at Mr Woodley’s paddock, they were met by their Temuka friends and united with i them in a good day’s fun. The juveniles mM had their hearts gladdened with races, ■ jumping, and scrambles after lollies, and V the elder people indulged in rounders, j jolly miller, drop the handkerchief, and M other picnic games. The Arowhenua £ Brass Band, under the able leadership of Jr Mr David Bryan, gave a good exhibition of their playing during the day, which helped to enliven things considerably. The catering, which was first-class, was done by Mr T. Barr of Temuka. A rounder match between the Geraldine and Temuka Lodges ended in a win for Geraldine by 10 points to 6. A large iced cake, presented by Mr T, Barr, for the married ladies’ race, went to Mrs Wallock, of the Geraldine Lodge. A young ladies race, the prizes for which were also presented by Mr Barr, was won by Miss E. Storey 1, Miss N. Radford 2, and Miss S. Greaves 3. At the conclusion of the day’s sport the Rev. J. Dellow proposed three hearty cheers for Mr Woodley for the use of his ’ paddock. He said one of the chief things to make a picnic enjoyable was a good spot, and he was sure they were all satisfied that Mr Woodley’s paddock was as nice a spot as they could have. Three hearty cheers were given for Mr Mr Barr, the Rev. J. Dellow, the picnic, and the Arowheuua Brass Band. Mr McCaskey took photos of several groups, and the picnickers dispersed entirely satisfied that they had enjoyed on the first day of the N ew Year. S. C. CALEDONIAN SPORTS. The seventeenth annual gathering in connection with the South Canterbury Caledonian Society commenced yesterday on the grounds of the society. The attendance was large but it cannot be said that it was equal to former years, a fact which, doubtless due to the uncertain . state of the weather. The previous evening was threatening rain, and no doubt this had the effect of keeping a greatmanyfrom risking a journey to Timaru. However, the attendance was good, and the sports passed off very successfully. We find we were misinformed as regards the licensed booths. Two of these were on the ground, one kept by Mr Moore,, of the Empire Hotel, and the other by Mr Rothwell, and the only booth which the Women’s Temperance Association had control of£ was the light refreshments one. We-r&Sr gret we made the mistake, but the mation having been supplied to us by Good Templar made us regard it as correct.
