CAKE AND APRON FAIR.

A Cake ami Apron Fair was held in the Volunteer Hall, Temuka, yesterday, under the auspices of the local Primitive Methodist Church. The hall was profusely decorated with evergreens, flags, etc., the work of doing so having been performed with much zeal and industry by Messrs Williams and Robinson, who deserve great credit for the tasteful manner in which they had everything arranged. Inside the door was a stall on which there was a wonderful variety of aprons, and other small articles of apparel. This was in charge of Misses Brogden and Uden. Next Miss Robinson had a handsome Christmas tree, on which there was an immense quantity of toys of all kinds. The cake stall, in charge of Mesdames Prattley and Woodley, was also well loaded with a splendid lot of cakes of all kinds. A toy stall was tastefully arranged by Mrs Burton, and on a flower stall, over which Mrs Fletcher presided, there was a splendid array of pot flowers, while the refreshment stall was in charge of Mrs Metson. The Rev. W. C. Wood had a small stall, which was laden with the choicest articles that can be imagined. There were to be seen some really beautiful dressing cases for ladies and gentlemen, as well as some lady’s companions elegantly mounted. Some pictures on opal are of a high style of art; in fact, everything upon this stall, is really tasteful. Above the stall are exhibited the plans of the new church. On the whole the hall presented a very interesting appearance, and much credit

is due to all concerned for the tasteful manner in which it was got up. The fair was opened by the Rev. W. C. Wood at about three o’clock. In the course of a brief address ho mentioned that there would be no auction but that everything, would be marked in plain figures and at the lowest prices. The proceeds would be devoted to the building fund of the new church, and for so good a cause he hoped there would be a liberal response. The Rev. Mr Watters also delivered a brief address.

The attendance in the evening was good, and a fair amount of business was done. The Arowhenua Brass Band, under the leadership of Mr D. Bryan, added to the enjoyment of visitors by playing a number of pleasing selections in good style. The fair will be open again to-day.
