Wellington Election. —Mr Bell addressed a large meeting at Wellington last Friday night. Referring to the interference of Ministers in the election, he said he did not deny the right of members of the Government to exercise political influence, but he certainly denied their right to turn the Ministerial residences into committee rooms for political organisation. He urged on the community not to accept dictation in regard to the choice of a representative for the seat, and said that-he stood alone in the election without the support of any foreign syndicate. . He criticised the Taxation Bill of last session in a hostile spirit, and declared that in no sense had the taxation been shifted from the shoulders of the working classes by that measure. He also attacked the general administration of the Government, devoting some time to criticism of their land policy. He declared himself .in favour of the system of perpetual leasing, extension of the franchise to women, and the present system of education. In conclusion he said he believed that on the 15th January next the election of Wellington would sound the death knell of the present Administration. At the conclusion of his address Mr Bell received a vote of thanks, and the meeting broke up with cheers for McLean and Bell.

Robert Payne, a gum digger at Puhipuhi, wandered from his camp when insane on Friday. He was brought back by a mate, and died almost immediately.
