CHRISTCHURCH STOCK'MARKETS.

The cattle market was held on Tuesday instead of Wednesday. There was a moderate attendance and a fair entry of stock.

Store Sheep—About 1500 stores were yarded. Crossbred hoggets fetched 8s to 8s 3d, hoggets in wool 13s 2d, crossbred ewes from which the lambs had been taken Bs. A line of Mr R. M. Morton’s rejects, all sound-mouthed, brought 9s sd. Two-tooth crossbred wethers sold at 9s 7d and 4-tooths at 11s 6d.

Fat Lambs—More than 500 fat lambs were penned and sold at 8s 9d to 11s 3d. Fat Sheep—About 5000 fat sheep were yarded. Several lots were passed unsold. Best crossbred wethex-s and maiden ewes sold at 11s to 13s 3d, second rate sheep 8s 4d to 9s 9d. Crossbred ewes sold at 7s 2d for some very inferior ones to 12s 3d for prime fat sheep. Shorn merino wethers brought 7s to 10s 9d.

Cattle—23l head of fat cattle were yarded. A large number had to be withdrawn. Best bullocks sold from £6 5s to £7 17s 6d, heifers from £5 5s to £7 ss. The sale of cows was very slack. With the exception of a few nead of young stock the entry of store cattle consisted of old and dry cows. The youngsters sold were yearlings at 24s to 335, with good enquiry for more. 2-year-old steers and heifers sold at 35s to £2 15s. Pigs—The sale of pigs was the least important of any this season. AUSTRALIAN MARKETS. Sydney, Dec. 14. Potatoes are quoted at £4 per ton. ENGLISH AND FOREIGN MARKETS. London, Dec. 13. The Auckland Harbor Board’s 4 percent. and 5 per cent, stocks have risen £l. Part of the butter by the Pakeha and Tainui was not sold, being below the quality suitable for the counter trade. Trengrouse and Co. say that only the finest quality will overcome the prejudices of buyers. The brokers are reducing prices by 2s iind 3s. The Grocers Gazette states that all pi-ices will probably rise. Tallow, mutton, 25s 9d; do, beef, 24s 6d." The English wheat market is firmer, the Continental is depressed, and the American is improving. Dec. 14. A better tone is evinced in colonial stocks. New Zealand 3J per cents, have advanced 10s.

City merchants consider that the finest quality of colonial butter will shortly oust the Danish article froiu the English markets. The Portsea Building Society, with a mortgage value of £70,000, has suspended payment.

Berlin, Dec. 14. Spain and Holland will join the Commercial League.
