TERRIFIC STORMS.
...Terrible..,mischief was wrought by the storms which swept the British Isles for some days up to October 20th. The Shannon overflowed its banks, submergi_!cr land, drowning , cattle and sheep and destroying buildings. The sea wall at Saudgate, near .Folkestone, was destroyed, and many houses situated near the shore were washed over. In many places the highroad leading to Bribe and Folkestone, was destroyed. At Windsor and many other points the Thames overflowed. About Queenstown, Ireland, the gale was unusually fierce. Some thirty crafts, large and small, were driven ashore. Youghal was flooded by the sea. Along the course of the Blackwater river sheep and cattle were destroyed in great numbers. 200 vessels, more or less damaged, sought refuge in Holyhead. At Mayport, Cumberland, a thriving shipbuilding port, the gale caused enormous damage. The reclamation works near Ennis, County Clare, which cost the Government £712,000 were ruined. Many villages in the Trent Valley were submerged, and the rivers Esk, Ibber, Runney, Outway, and Parrot overflowed their banks. Between Bridgewater and Bridgport the country for miles looked like a sea.
