WINCHESTER NOTES.
As advertised, there will be a meeting of the Fruit. Preserving and Export Company this evening. We are sorry to note this is an adjourned meeting from last Saturday evening. There were not enough shareholders present to form a quorum, only three gentlemen being present, and the required number being twelve. It is to be regretted that such a lack of interest is shown in this matter by shareholders and others. South Canterbury possesses many advantages for the culture of different fruits, and certainly a better centre than Winchester could not be obtained for the district. The company have purchased a suitable piece of ground on which to erect the necessary works, and also have a fair credit balance in hand. Could the residents of Winchester fully realise what benefit an industry of this kind would be even to their little township we have no doubt they would do all in their power to make the undertaking a success. We trust there will be a well-attended meeting to night, and that a final decision in one direction or the other will be taken.
A meeting of the Library Committee was held in the Mechanic’s Institute on 3rd inst., when it was resolved to spend a good round sum on a new assortment of books. The society now occupies a good sound position, and as the committee have set to work with a will it only remains for the residents to give a helping hand to ensure success.
The visit of the Bishop, who holds a confirmation service in St. John’s Church, on 6th inst., at 11 a.m., is being looked forward to with great interest here ; and no doubt, should the weather prove favorable, the building will be crowded.
