THE Temuka Leader. THURSDAY, DECEMBER 3, 1891. THE WELLINGTON ELECTION.
The resignation of Mr Kennedy Macdonald has, if we are to believe the Wellington correspondents of the Christchurch papers, led to some excitement in Wellington. The Press tells that Mr H. D. Bell, son of Sir F. Dillon Bell, late Agent-general, and mayor-elect of Wellington is sure to be elected. He is very popular, and also very radical in his idea’s but he will follow the Opposition leader. His great chance is that three or four candidates are coining forward on the Liberal side so he is sure to get in. This is the way the Press put it, It will be seen that the hope of the Tory is that the Liberals will be split up into sections. On the other hand the Lyttelton Times tells us that the Liberals are quite confident of a victory. Mr McLean, who is the chosen candidate of the party, will not be hampered with other candidates on his own side. On the contrary, the other gentleman mentioned as probable candidates have signified their willingness to do all they possibly can to secure Mr McLean’s election. Mr George Fisher is working heaven and earth against Mr McLean out of pure spite to the Government. This is the position of affairs’at present, if our information is correct, and from the look of things we anticipate that the struggle will be a fierce one.
