“FINANCIAL DIFFICULTY.”

TO THE EDITOR. Sir. —l thank Mr Carston for his courtesy in furnishing a balance-sheet of the tm last concert.” That balance-sheet does not represent a single correct item of the last (that is, the June) concert. The receipts were £lO, not £4lls 3d, and the items of expenditure were not those appearing. It is a pity that Mr Carston should not demand a clear acquittance from his predecessors in office, and not suffer in any way for his vicarious sins. He has been left a legacy—not a windfall—of financial difficulties, as he himself has aptly termed it, and he has to my mind, in his goodness of heart, adopted a specially - manufactured statement of figures supplied by the responsible party. Mr Carston will, I hope, accept my assurance that my use of the expression “ Simon pure ” was not meant to ruffle his equanimity. It was used in its general acceptance, without the least tinge of irritation or intended censure. If the matter is pursued a little further, I am open to guarantee that the “ financial difficulty ” (deficit) will eventually develop ftself into an unexpected windfall. Let him see if £3 19s 6d was not sensibly diminished from the actual money handed over to the first banker long before Mr Carston’s assumption of office, examine skilfully “ such materials ” as have lately been served up to the second banker, and he will find that he will thank a genuine friend for remarks made in no illuatured spirit.—l am, Etc., Guardian. 16th November, 1891.
