CHRISTCHURCH SHOW.

The Canterbury Metropolitan Show commenced on Thursday. The weather was fine, and there was a good attendance of visitors from all parts of the colony, including the Hons. J. McKenzie and Bryec. Prominent features of the show are the sheep and implements. The Lincoln class was the largest ever shown. In strong combing merino, Chas. Gaulter, of Blenheim, took first prize and medal for best ram, and Bullen Bros., of Kaikoura, second. In young rams, Henry Hoare, of Pleasant Point, took first, and in ewes. Bullen Bros. In Bomney Marsh J. M, Reid, of Oamaru, and J. Deans were the chief prizetakers, and in Border Leicesters the Hon. M. Holmes and J. M. Reid were most successful. Mr J. Deans was a very Successful exhibitor of Shorthorn cattle. Messrs J. & J. Grigg also took a number of prizes. Mr E. Menlove’s Oxford Roan Duke took first and champion for shorthorn bull. In Hereford cattle Mr A. M. Clark, Temuka, was the chief exhibitor, in. Dutch Frisian Mr J. Grigg, in Ayrshire Mr J. Little and Mr J. M. Reid, all classes being very well filled with good stock. There was a fine show of fat cattle, the prizes being divided between Messrs S. Garforth, W. Henderson, J. Ferguson, J. Deans, andD. Rutliorford, all local breeders. Draught horses were not shown in particularly large numbers, but wer,e of good quality. The show of implements was very fine, all the leading manufacturers and importers being represented. The Wolseley and Burgon sheep shearing machines were shown at work, and attracted considerable attention,

Haydon, Manson Bros., W. B. Andrew. Border Leicester —Hon. M. Holmes, John Reid, McKercher Bros. Lincoln—Frederick Sutton, Henry Over-! ton, Hon. M. Holmes. Romney Marsh— John Reid. Southdown —J. Deans, T. Garforth. Shropshire Down John Grigg, S. Gibbs, Rowley and Hamilton. Hampshire Down—Max Friedlander.. Crossbred—F. and G. Bullen, Max Friedlander, James Stringfellow. Fat sheep—J. Deans, Max Friedlander, R. W. Chapman, S. Garforth, J. Eaglesome. Cattle (shorthorn) —E. Menlove, J. Deans, R. Guthrie, H. Hight. Hereford—A. M. Clark. Ayrshire—J. M, Reid, James Little. Milking cows— James Little. Fat cattle—S. Garforth, John Fergusson, Jonn Deans. Horses (draught) —William Boag, John Boag, John Grigg. John Small, P. Cunningham. Pigs—J. Rowe, J. Deans, Bramley, Jonathan Brown. Yesterday, the “people’s day” in connection with the carnival week, was observed as a close holiday. Thousands of people were present at the Metropolitan Show, and it was thought the attendance eclipsed all previous records. The weather was really magnificent. Other attractions were the Lancaster Park Trotting meeting, and a dog show, and the trams were crowded with excursionists for Summer and Brighton.
