COMMERCIAL.
CHRISTCHURCH STOCK MARKETS. At the Addington yards on Wednesday the total number of stock yarded comprised 4379 sheep and lambs, 438 head of cattle, and 122 pigs. Fat Cattle About 190 head were brought forward. The supply being in excess of trade requirements a decrease in values on last week’s quotations had to be accepted. The feature of the market was the Cheviot Hill consignment of 9 prime bullocks, which realised from £9 10s to £l2 15s per head, other drafts making from £7 to £8 15s per head, medium weights £5 5s upwards, best cows and heifers £5 to £6 11s, medium and inferior £3 10s upwards. Store Cattle—A moderate entry of 248 head met with a fair demand, and good business was done at values equal to about last week’s quotations. Good three-year-old steers ranged from £3 10s to £4 2s, and two-year-olds from 42s to 475, yearlings 18s to 28s, according to condition, heifers in proportion. Fat Sheep—A very small • entry, which caused keen competition from the trade to secure their requirements. The bulk of the entry consisted of merinos, which, of course, met with ready sMes. Pens of best crossbred wethers made 18s to 21s 6d, medium 14s 6d upwards, pens of best fat crossbred ewes 15s -to 18s fid, medium 13s to 14s fid, light weights 10s fid upwards, shorn crossbreds 13s to 15s 7d, merino wethers in wool, top pens 13s fid to 14s fid, medium 11s fid upwards. Fat lambs —A small entry, for which there was a keen demand, top pens making 12s to 14s 9d, and medium 10s upwards. Store sheep—A moderate entry, the demand fer which was less keen than for the last few weeks. Crossbred ewes, with lambs at foot ranged from 16s to 17s fid; crossbred hoggets 10s 7d to 13s 7d; and 224 crossbreds, mixed sexes, in forward condition, 15s to 15s 9d. A fair clearance was effected.
Pigs—A small entry, for which there was little demand, and sales could only be affected at very reduced rates. Sheepskins—Rough Fat, Hides, and Calfskins—There was the usual ance of fellmongcio. Competition was good throughout, and all lots cleared at following values ; —Butchers’ best crossbreds, fis 9d to 7s 9d; medium, 4s fid upwards; butchers’ best merinos, fis to fis sd; medium 3s 9d upwards; pelts, Is 3d ; lambs, lOd to lssd ; rough fat, id to Ijd best parcels. Hides and calfskins are without alteration.
DUNEDIN PRODUCE MARKETS. The following is the report for the week ending Wednesday : Wheat—Market has inquiry; prices are firm. Good samples are very scarce. Prime wheats, 4s lOd to 5s ; other good milling sorts, 4s fid to 4s 8d; fowls’ wheat, good whole, 4s to 4s 3d. Onions —Scarce, £lO. Barley—Malting, 3s to 3s 3d ; milling, 2-t 4d to 2s fid; feed, 2s to 2s 3d. Pearl barley, £l3. uacs—Dest milling and seed, Is fid to la 7d; bright plump feed range from Is fid to Is 7d; other sorts, Is 3d to ls4d —all sacks extra, off trucks, and ex store. Flour—Roller, £l3 f.o.b. Timaru; stone, £l2 ss. Oatmeal, £Blos to £lolos. Bran, £3. Sharps, £4. Potatoes —30s per ton; good quality wanted.
Pigs—-1401b to 160&, well fed, 2|d to 2fd, and scarcely any buyers at that low figure ; laige sizes not saleable ; hams, 7d to 8d; bacon, 5d to fid.
Chaff—Up to £2 15s for prime. Straw— (Oaten and wheaten), 30s. Hay (oaten), £3. Clover and ryegrass hay, £3 5s to £3 10s. Butter —Prime salt, nominal at 8d; fresh plentiful. Eggs are now getting more plentiful and have eased off.
Honey—sd per lb. Cheese—ln demand; stocks are now getting short. Factory, s£d ; dairy, sd. Grass Seeds—Ryegrass, 3s fid to 5s 9d; cocksfoot, 4£d to sjd per lb.
Sheepskins—On Tuesday prices all round were about on a level with last week’s for well-dried lines, while others of low quality and green skins were barely in such good request. Green crossbred sold at 3s fid to 5s lid ; do merino, 2s 9d to 4s 8d ; dry crossbreds, Is 3d to 5s lOd; do merinos, Is Id to 5s fid; lambs and pelts, 9d to Is Id ; skins (bales), 4id to fi£d per lb. Hides —The demand is slack, with buying confined to local consumption. Heavies and selected lots, 2Jd to 2fd per ; medium weights in good order, lid to 2d per lb ; light weights, Id to l£d per lb ; slippy and bulls’, £d to l£d per lb ; green ox hides, 10s to 15s; do cow do, fis to 12s, Tallow Prime rendered in better request with a slight advance in values. Lower grades unchanged. Rough fat, very little ottering in consequence of the works being closed. Quotations :—Prime rendered, £l9 to £2l per ton ; medium, £l7 to £lB per ton; inferior, £ls to £l6 10s per ton ; rough fat, £lO to £l4 per ton.
DUNEDIN STOCK MARKETS. At the Burnside Markets on Wednesday the following business was transacted:— Fat Cattle—Extra prime bullocks sold at £l2, £ll 7s fid, £ll ss, £lO 17s fid, £lO 15i, to £lO 10s; heifers up to £9 12s fid; cows up to £5 12s fid. There were sold for Mr Win. Grant (Elloughton Grange), 7 bullocks at from £6 5s to £7. Fat Sheep—Crossbred wethers sold at 20s fid, 19s 9d, 17s 3d,’ 15s 9d, to 15s. Crossbred ewes up tq 18s; prime merino wethers at 14s fid; crossbreds at 15s 9d. Fat Lambs —Sold at from 8s to 14s. A few too light for the trade were passed. Pigs—Bacon pigs sold at 28s to 335; porkers, 19s to 255; stores, 12s to 18s; suckers, fis to lls.

Potatoes, New Zealand, £2 15s to £3 ss; circular heads, £4 15s. Onions, £5. Butter, 7d to 8d; factory made, 9d. Cheese, fid to 7jd. Bacon, 5d to 7d; hams, New Zealand, lOd to lid. Melbourne, Oct. 28. The wheat market is unsettled. The latest quotation is 5s 5Jd. Flour, stonemade, £l2 to £l3; roller, £l3 to £l4. Oats, Algerian, Is 10£d to 2s Id; stout, 2s 7£d. Maize, 3s 3d. Barley, malting, English sorts, 3s Id to 3s 3d. Peas, 2s sd. Adelaide, Oct. 28. Wheat is quiet at 4s 8d to 4s 9d. Flour, stone made, £lO 5s to £lO 15s; roller made, £ll 5s to £ll 15s. Bran, Is Id. Pollard, Is Id. ENGLISH MARKETS. London, Oct. 28. The total quantity of wheat and flour afloat for the United Kingdom is 2,120,000 quarters, and for the Continent 2,148,000 quarters. The latest share quotations are: — U.S.S, Company of New Zealand, £11; N.Z. Shipping Company, £3 15s ; Shaw, Saville, £9 10s. The American visible supply of wheat is 46,700,000 bushels.
