The weather on the first day of th» show was the finest experienced for years, but the attendance was the smallest we have ever seen on the ground. The weather on the second day turned out most favorable, although the early part of the day up till noon was anything but promising, a strong cold wind making the drive to Timaru rather unpleasant. The attendance, however, was very large, and a good deal of interest was added to the show by the presence of His Excellency the Governor and Lady Onslow, and the Honorable J. Ballance, Premier of the colony, as well as Major Steward, Speaker of the House of Eepresentatives. Mr Stubbs, the indefatigable secretary, was as civil, obliging, and courteous as ever, and we have to express our indebtedness to him for many kindnesses. SHEEP. The show of sheep was excellent, but the competition was rather limited. In the fine combing merino class the competition was practically limited to Messrs A. B. Smith and Henry Hoare, and they divided the honors between them, with the exception of a crumb or two, which fell to the lot of Mr Elworthy and the N.Z. and A. Land Company. In the strong combing Messrs C. G. Tripp and A. M. Clark were the chief exhibitors. Mr C. G. Tripp, for the best ram, secured not only first prize, but also the champion prize, with a splendid specimen of the breed, and, considering the altitude of the country, and the fact that the sheep had neither been hand-fed nor housed, the win does him infinite credit. Mr Tripp altogether won nine prizes and Mr A. M. Ciark fourteen prizes in this class, so that this district figured prominently in this department of the show. But Mr A. M. Clark's exhibits were not limited to this department alone. In fact, they were, to Ibe met with in almost every class. In the I English Leicester class, however, he had a successful rival in Mr Threlkeld, whose sheep secured the lion's share of the prizes, but Mr Clark got four of the prizes, and, although, of course, we must bow to the , decision of the judges, it was freely whispered he ought to have got more. The Border Leicesters were well represented by excellent sheep, but the competition lay between the N.Z. and A. Land Company and Mr Murdoch, between whom the prizes were pretty evenly distributed. In the Lincoln class again Mr A. M. Clark figured prominently, but the championship was won by a ram bred by himself and exhibited by Mr John Murray;, of Orari. This was a grand sheep, and, with a fleece »f neaxiy 12 months' growth, he wsa a picture worth seeing. But Mr Clark took the lion's share of the prizes in the other classes. In the Romney Marsh the N.Z. and A. Land Company were the only exhibitors, and got all the prices. It appears absurd to award prizes where Ifiieve is only one competitor. It is no competition at all. There were only two or three exhibits in the Shropshire Downs, and all the prizes in the Southdowns went to Mr A. M. Clark. In fact, only for Mr Clark the show would have been small. In fat sheep he was also successful, although the special prize of the N.Z. L. and M. A.* Company went to Mr Restell. Here it is pertinent to remark that farmers appear to have given up showing altogether. This is to be regretted, but probably they feel that they have no chance against the large land-owners, or it may oe that they do not think a judge would see the good points of a cockatoo's sheep as readily as he would the large land-owner's. Be this as it may, the fapt remains that the exhibits of farmers were conspicuous by their absence, which is to be regretted, as it tends to limit the interest in the show. CATTLE.
This department was really not worth mentioning. This is not intended as a reflection on the few cattle exhibited, which were very good, but it is meant to' emphasise our disappointment at the smallness of the entry. In the Herefords Mr A. M. Clark was practically the only exhibitor, and in Ayrshires the competition was no bettor, "We remember a time when large numbers of cattle were a feature of the show, but of Me years they have grown less and less, and only for Mr A. M. Clark the pens this year would have, been empty, Particulars of other exhibits will appear 12 our n ? xt issm SHEEP. . The sums of 20s and 10s were given as first and second prizes respectively in every class. The association gave a prize of £2 for the best ram of any age, in Merino, Leicester, and Lincoln classes. The judges commended the third best exhibit when thought worthy. Merino (a) —Fine Combing. (No restriction as to feeding). Judges—Messrs A. McKellar, Otekaike, D. Sutherland, Omarama.
