HONOR TO WHOM HONOR IS DUE.
TO THE EDITOH. Sir, —Thsre is a class of men—too selfish and insignificant themselves to take a snare of our public affairs who are always ready to berate and vilify those who do give their time and trouble for the public good. "Ratepayer's" letter in your today's issue is a good specimen of the way they do it. Let us glance at the charges he has against the TemukajTown Board. There was only a few shillings between the tender accepted and that of the other tenderers who had had experience of the same kind of work. Would the board have been justified in spending £IOO experimenting, for the chance of saving a few pounds—a fraction of a fartning to eaon of the ratepayer s 1 There is no reason to believe that the board are paying more tuan fanvalue for the work being done. They arc not public-spirited men who encourage tin. abominable system of having work uon, for less. In tue present oonaition of laboi tuere is no more justification ior accepting a tender ior less tnan tae work ten Jere f jX- is wortu tuan tuere is ior robumg a ma,. i„ lie is not oble to deiend himself. " Itato payer's" cnarge number two, about tm stuff like shingle, is too vague. The charge of paying a man to spread shingle and keep tally, ratner than allow the contractor to keep his own tally, needs no comment. There are lots of contractors who wouL spread shingle for the privilege of keeping tally. Then there is tne well and no water Well, well; tnere are lots of wells without water—a fine excuse for going to tne to get a drink. —I am, etc., Another Ratepayer. Temuka October 527 tn, 1891.
