WOODBURY SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

A special meeting of the above commiteo was held on October 24th, all the members being present. Mr Dean occupied the chair. He stated he had called the meeting in consequence of the application from the secretary of the Woodbury Athletic Club asking for use of the room for a ball on the 9th Nov., 1891. It was proposed by Mr Fietield, and seconded by Mr Harris—“ That the request be granted and the charge be &!• Mr Cooling proposed as an amendment, and Mr Dean seconded —“ That the charge be 155.” Mr Flatman proposed and Mr Webb seconded an a further amendment “ That the application be not granted, in consequence of the misconduct of a portion of the larrikin element.” Mr Flatman gave several reasons for not being willing to accede to the request, and stated that a certain class of youths are in the habit of annoying the meetings of the Army and also wilfully injuring the school property. This amendment was put to the meeting first and resulted in only the mover and seconder voting for it. Mr Cooling’s amendment was then put and carried by Messrs Dean, Cooling, Gick, and Harris voting for it, and Messrs Flatman and Webb against. A lengthy discussion then took place caused by the attendance of the larrikins at the Army meetings and throwing stones on the school roof and otherwise annoying the meetings and the committee. Mr Fiefield moved— “ That any religious denomination be allowed the use of the room between the hours of 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. free of charge; after those hours a charge of 10s be made, (the school being at liberty).” An amendment was proposed by Mr Flatman, seconded by Mr Webb, and carried—“ That matters stand as at present, to see if the disorderly conduct can be suppressed.” Mr Cooling stated that he would resign, as he could not sit on the committee and see the property destroyed. The chairman asked Mr Cooling to reconsider the matter, whereupon Mr Cooling wrote his resignation and handed the same to the chairman. Mr Harris also stated he would resign, but did not hand in his resignation. This terminated the meeting. .
