CENSUS RETURNS.
Wellington, Oct. 22, The aiiuual statement of cheese manufactured in the colony, as shown in the census returns, gives 6,975,7881 b, as against 4,584,6951 b shown by the 1886 census. The census shows there are 24 holdings in the colony between 50,000 and ; 100,000 acres as follows Auckland 7 ; Taranaki, Hawke’s Bay, Wellington, Nelson* and Chatham Islands, 1 each; Marlborough and Canterbury, 3; and Otago 6. In 1886 there were 26, There are 7 holdings of upwards of 100,000 acres, 3 in Wellington, and 1 each in Auckland, Hawke’s Bay, Nelson, and Otago. In 1886 there were only 4. Lands occupied :by Maoris are not included. The number of dwellings in the colony (exclusive of those used by Maoris) were y as follows, the figures in the census of A 1886 being given in bracketslnhabited, 119,766 [108,467]; uninhabited, 9558 [9146]; buildings, 425 [B34]; tents, &c., 4985 [3504].
