INFLUENZA IN AUSTRALIA.
Sydney, Oct. 14. Influena is rapidly spreading throughout the country and several deaths have resulted. A number of cases are reported in the city. Melbourne, Oct. 14. The fatal character of the influenza is creating widespread alarm. The Rev. Mr Rigg, President of the Wesleyan Conference, and Mr A. W. Musgrove, Secretary for Trade and Customs, have succumbed to the epidemic. Several other prominent citizens died to-day, and many others are in a critical condition. Adelaide, Oct. 14. Influenza is prevalent in the city. THE NEW SYLLABUS. Wellington, Oct. 13. The new syllabus for public schools, which has been of preparation for some time past, has now been completed, and the necessary Order-in-Council bringing it into effect will be gazetted tomorrow. The new regulations occupy much more space than the old ones, but the additional space is due first to a lengthy exposition of the intention and spirit of the regulations, and secondly to greater fullness of definition, resulting in a narrowing of possible demands. The definition of drawing is the most conspicuous example of enlargement of description with simplication of work. The teachers’ freedom with respect to the classification of pupils, and also with respect to the planning of the work in any particular subject, is largely extended. The distinction between the larger schools and the smaller ones is more clearly marked than before by an indication of the propriety of paying less attention to class subjects in small schools and of the comparatively optional character of the additional subjects. In history and geography the work to be done is much more closeiy defined than it was, and liberty is given to the teacher to substitute equivalent work for the work prescribed except in the fourth standard. Grammar is made a class subject, but composition is always a pass subject. The syllabus of agricultural knowledge proposed by the Educational Institute is substituted for agricultural chemistry afs an alternative for elementary science. In drawing the use of the rules is required in the first standard, concurrently with the simplest freehand work. In the third standard, a very elementary knowledge of degrees is added. Plain geometry, thirty specified problems, forms the staple of the fourth standard work, and the scale drawing of this standard is confined to very simple applications of scales to the specified problem. Scale drawing is the staple of the fifth standard work. In the sixth standard, elementary solid geometry is introduced, and on this the model drawing required (and strictly defined) is based. These are the main alterations.
